In our previous bath bomb making activities( Mermaid and The Avengers) the kids learned about the chemical reaction that takes place to cause the fizz. The reaction between an acid and a base is facilitated by the addition of water. Carbon Dioxide (CO2) is released in gaseous form, creating the loveable and enjoyable fizzy, bubbly bath bomb. In this bath bomb recipe the chemical reaction is between citric acid and cream of tartar (acids) and baking soda (base). To make an ethical (or unethical) choice, it can change the arc of someone’s life and how they are judged by others. One choice can change so much. In a small bowl add coconut oil, approximately 10 drops of the essential oils of your choice, and polysorbate 80. Blend well. Then add to the large bowl. Start with your large bowl. In it combine all the dry ingredients – baking soda, citric acid and cornstarch. Mix well. Have your young wizards use caution with this step. Enthusiastic potion makers sometimes cause the citric acid to become airborne and this can be an irritant. Always do your potions work (bath bomb making) in a well ventilated area. If you don't know the colours of each Hogwarts House – first of all, how dare you – they are red for Gryffindor, green for Slytherin, yellow for Hufflepuff and blue for Ravenclaw.

Our severely conflicted potions teacher, Professor Snape, would insist that we turn our bath bomb making projects into a lesson. It fizzes, erupts, smells (amazing), sounds like a potion the Half Blood Prince would be proud of! I was out of mica colouring, so we used food colouring and only one colour in this demonstration. This means our colours are paler since we could only use 2 drops of food colouring because the liquid colour causes the mix to start reacting. So when it came time to try a new bath bomb recipe, the one that came to mind first was creating our very own Golden Snitch. This recipe is a little different from our other bath bomb recipes, we changed up the ingredients yet again, because… well science! We know bath bombs are about the chemical reaction between acids and bases from our previous bath bomb making sessions. So like any great potions student, we like to experiment! This time the change in ingredients created copious amounts of BUBBLES!

Harry Potter Cosmetic bag

Once removed from the molds I like to let them sit out for another day before I put them away. This helps them really harden up.

The best part is that the science behind bath bombs is fascinating and has lead to some really great experiments and discussions as we make these fun treats. Using your hands (with gloves on if you prefer), mix all the ingredients together. Break down any lumps and make sure everything is nicely mixed in. Enjoy your Harry Potter Bath Bomb! Simply add to your bath water to start fizzing. I recommend removing the feathers before adding to the water, but my son thought the soggy feathers were hilarious. The choice is yours! The Science Behind The Fizzy Magic in A Harry Potter Bath BombOf course, you’ll need something to put all your new products in, and these cosmetic bags come adorned with your Hogwarts house traits. Harry Potter Deathly Hallows Brush Kit It’s kind of funny how the ideas build on themselves around here. I’ve been a HUGE fan of Harry Potter ever since I read Sorcerer’s Stone in 1999. About 5 years ago I started reading aloud the book to my kids. If I remember correctly, I got about 3 chapters in before my oldest, who was 7 at the time, took the book from me and devoured the whole thing in 3 days. He then went on to read the entire series three times over. The best part about this bath bomb project is that it feels like a real potions class! With all the little cauldrons and the many bowls of different coloured potions brewing, it makes for a fantastically real feeling class from Hogwarts. We just need Snape pacing around us, peering down his nose and it would be perfect. You should also use your bath bomb within a couple of months. It will start to lose its ability to react over time, and your bath bomb fizz will be a lot less impressive. Eventually it won’t fizz at all. Themed by the four Hogwarts houses, these bath bombs are no ordinary ones. Upon hitting the water, expect the bomb to transform your bath into a celebration of your favourite Hogwarts house colour. Harry Potter Bewitching PH Balm

For each cauldron, you will add the darker color of the Hogwarts House first and fill a bit less than halfway, pressing down gently. The lighter color will be added next, again pressing down gently until just under the lip of the cauldron. The white mixture will be on top and pressed down until flush with the top of the cauldron. In the world of Hogwarts the Hufflepuff House is definitely the least “showy”. Gryffindor is known for being brave, Slytherin is cunning, Ravenclaw is smart and Hufflepuff is kind. For some reason being kind is seen as the least important and I see so many kids not want to be in Hufflepuff. If you are trying to reduce your footprint, I highly recommend using a biodegradable glitter or not using glitter at all in your bath bombs. I know some kids love the glitter, and really with these Harry Potter Bath Bombs it adds a bit of sparkly magic, so I have included glitter, but the choice is yours when making these for yourself. I have linked to both a cosmetic glitter and a biodegradable version below.

Themed around the Deathly Hallows, the most powerful objects in the wizarding world, these brushes will certainly help you become the Master of Make-up! Hogwarts house themed eye shadow palettes Now it might seem like a little bit of magic the way bath bombs erupt in the warm bath water, but it is actually a chemical reaction. When the citric acid and baking soda (the base) are dry they don’t react. They need water to trigger the reaction, which releases CO2 (carbon dioxide) gas, creating our fizzy, bubbly eruption. Inspired by the stories of Harry Potter and the Wizarding World, the collection features everything from bath bombs, body lotions and beauty masks, with some magical surprises woven in. One of the themes I love most about Harry Potter is this powerful belief in the choices being more important than circumstances. In the first bowl add the silver mica powder and silver glitter (about 1 teaspoon of each to start). Mix it in really well with your hands (you may want to wear gloves for this part). Really work it through until the colour is evenly dispersed.

Pygmy Puff blush

Infused with coconut oil, Vitamin E and Aloe Leaf Extract, these magical lip balms react to your skin’s PH levels and create the perfect colour shade to compliment your tone. Harry Potter Body Lotion Kind of like the bubble bath scene when Harry was trying to discover the secrets of the Golden Egg. Bubbles, bubbles everywhere! And the wonderful, calming fragrance lasts and lasts. Makes for one of our best bath bombs yet! It starts with fizzy awesome and ends with a wonderful bubble bath.
