Elvis the movie is exactly what I would have hoped for from a Baz Luhrmann film, which is an experience that no one else can provide, a messy, chaotic, crazy, sometimes tin-eared yet audacious and immersive kaleidoscope of sight and sound that feels like a theme park ride. It is ridiculous, it is campy, it is emotional and sincere, it is, at points, even brilliant, and in a way, this shambolic style perfectly symbolizes Elvis himself, a performer that seems to be anything that the viewer projects onto him, a trailblazer who suffered for his art before becoming an irreplaceable industry and edifice of pop-culture obsession unto himself. The dedication and commitment Butler poured into his portrayal are palpable. The filmmakers' extensive search for the right actor to capture the essence of a cultural icon like Elvis speaks volumes about the magnitude of the role. Austin Butler's ability to not only mimic but embody Elvis's distinct voice and mannerisms is a testament to his craft and the intense preparation he underwent.
