Description

The Deverill’s have lost their castle to Bridie Doyle now Countess diMarcantonio. She was the daughter of the cook at the Deverill’s castle. She is now the mistress to the castle. How did this happen? Lots of drama to come. Santa Montefiore born Santa Palmer-Tomkinson is a British-Argentine writer best known for writing romantic thriller novels. She had always wanted to write professionally ever since she was a child and would graduate from reading children short stories to naïve love stories as she aged. At age twelve, she attended the Sherborne School for Girls where she was terrible at practically everything except for English, in which she was always the best in the class. She would frequently write up stories pairing up her friends with the boys they fancied from the Sherborne Boy’s School just across the fence. Her friends loved the stories, and fancying herself one of the greatest novelists that ever lived, she submitted them to a publisher only to be rejected. When she turned 19, her mother organized a teaching job for her on an Argentine Pampa, where she was to be tutor to three young children. The time that she spent in Argentine turned out to be some of the best things that her parents ever did for her. She fell in love with the country and made it her second home, even setting several of her novels there. The prose is polished and rich. The characters are flawed, driven, eccentric, and alluring. And the exceptionally compelling, well-paced plot is filled with familial dynamics, drama, emotion, self-discovery, secrets, revelations, love, loss, heartbreak, courage, duty, and passion all surrounded by authentic historical events of the time.

We begin this sequel in 1939 with Martha Wallace who is coming from America to find her birth mother. Martha was adopted as an infant and went to America with her happy parents. What secrets she will discover. Sigh. I'm actually rather bummed that my journey with the Deverills is over. Even though the book did what I feared and wrapped some things up easier and neater than I would like, some of the ending parts were satisfying and I think I'm going to have a bit of a book hangover from this trilogy. Which is not necessarily a bad thing. I already miss the beautifully descriptive, emotion-evoking writing and the vivid pictures of Ireland and London that Montefiore provides throughout the book. I have a tendresse for sweeping and epic romantic sagas set around huge houses and aristocratic families and Santa Montefiore hits the spot for me like few other writers...

It is 1925 and Castle Deverill has burned to the ground. War and deception have divided the daughters of Ireland, but Celia vows to return her ancestral home to its former glory. Kitty raises a young family but longs for something more, and Bridie flourishes as a New York socialite consumed by revenge. Celia works to reunite her childhood friends and restore the place they once called home, but soon everything she knows is cast into doubt as the Great Depression looms. The second novel in the beloved Deverill Chronicles, perfect for everyone who loves Jojo Moyes, Rosamund Pilcher and Victoria Hislop. If you are a fan of family saga type books you will love this series. It's a touch of Downton Abbey along with rural hard living families spanning a time period of 1925 to 1938 (book 2).

I came into The Daughters of Castle Deverill, the second book in a series written by established British author Santa Montefiore, having just read its predecessor, Songs of Love and War. Although it is not essential to have read the first book, Songs of Love and War, to enjoy The Daughters of Castle Deverill, I believe it enhanced my reading experience. It gave me a good handle on the characters and the scene that had been set. However, Montefiore does devote time in the Daughters of Castle Deverill in keeping her readers up to speed on her characters and their lives, which enables the book to also be read as a standalone novel.
