There are parts of Central Sulawesi where you can just head off into the national parks, where very few people go. Sumatra, too, has some amazing parts, with Gunung Leuser National Park at its centre, one of the few places in Indonesia where working elephants still help to build bridges. It’s amazing to see. Their home zoo started, he says, with a few rescue animals –"the odd scruffy-looking dog, a mangy-looking parrot". Now it boasts a variety of birds, monkeys, snakes, chameleons, cats, dingoes and more. The 1950s-set drama continues. Mr Wantage has been sexually harassing nanny Chantrelle since she started working in his home; when things come to a head on his birthday, Leah embarks on a frantic road trip to help. But why does designated driver Hosanna want to make a detour? Graeme Virtue Time 9pm, BBC One

Dictator, Marxist, owner of skinny legs… whatever you want to say about Fidel Castro, you will probably find more evidence for those things than him being a birder, despite this being another generally accepted truth. The closest thing I can find is that he once met Ted Parker, a great ornithologist whose life was cut short. Agatha Christie I'm always worrying about the bears. They just stand around going, 'Look at that hairy bloke staring at us.'" I remain a big fan of The Clash, Elvis Costello, Talking Heads David Byrne of course..I was a hopeless devotee of Chrissie Hynde for many years – I do like a bit of twiddly but followed by something loud, like the Queens of the Stone Age, or Sugar..then quiet again with Yo La Tengo and a smidgen of Javanese Gamelan…then wistful with Beth Orton…then off again with the Chilli Peppers… In the car CD at the moment is PJ Harvey, Snow Patrol and The Streets…Top Geeza! My most recent gig I attended was Kraftwerk which was magnificent.” In2014, Bailey was selected toofficially openthe new raptor hospital at the International Centre forBirds of Prey. This came about after he discovered a Eurasian Eagle Owl in a restaurant while on holiday in Beijing. It was taped up ready to be killed and eaten. He bought the owl and released it.When watching Bill perform live I’ve always thought he was very birdlike, he always seems wide-eyed and a bit twitchy. I think he has been influenced by his years of bird watching and it’s nice to hear that when on tour he always finds time to have a look around to see what he can spot. Norway in particular was stunning. I would recommend anyone to try and get up to Svalbard. It blew me away because I didn’t know what to expect. I did a gig there – the most northerly on the planet – and expected about eight people shivering in a hut, but it’s a fully-functioning town of 2,000 out on the permafrost. Yes. Last year I walked The Ridgeway, which is the oldest road in Europe. It runs from near Tring in Hertfordshire down to the Avebury stone circle. It’s brilliant and has become one of my favourite routes. I often go up there now on the train to do a couple of sections.

IMDB used to credit Bill as being in this film, and many people seem to be under the impression that he appeared as a zombie – probably confusing him with one of the two bald, beard-sporting zombie twins that feature prominently. Simon Pegg and Edgar Wright confirm on the DVD commentary that he was unfortunately busy with other commitments at the time, so could not have a role. I have been tempted to just sit down and, in my kids terminology, 'drill it out', but instead I have restricted myself to two birds a night and I am enjoying it all the more for it. That’s the intention. It’s maybe not for the hardcore birder. It’s more for someone who doesn’t really think about birds, yet if something catches their eye, wherever they are in Britain, that bird will be in the book.If you're a parent who'd like to appear a bit clever when your child asks you the name of a bird; if you want to find a new and healthy hobby that takes you outdoors; or whether, quite simply, you want to understand a bit more about our natural environment and have a laugh at the same time, this is the companion book to have. The ice was starting to melt but it was still cold enough to ride across Arctic glaciers and frozen rivers on a snowmobile.

In 2020, Strictly Come Dancing called. Partnered with Oti Mabuse, Bailey might not have looked like a traditional dancer, but made up for it with enthusiasm and, as the competition wore on, increasingly impressive routines. The BBC One Saturday night audience discovered what Bailey fans have always known; that beneath his somewhat shambolic exterior, there is a virtuoso with a perfect sense of rhythm and timing. Politics is so difficult, particularly now, and really you want someone who is competent and disinterested, a dedicated public servant who’s acting for the good of the people of Britain,” he adds. “ I don’t recognise the Tories now. At least you used to know who stood for what. They were a bit more frugal and you could trust them. That seems to have gone out of the window. Even Thatcher liked Europe. They’re a very strange lot.” As the son of a doctor and a nurse, he is amazed by the nurse strikes. “It’s extraordinary the nurses have been put in this position,” he says. “The fact they’re there is proof of how intransigent the government is. My mum was an NHS nurse. It’s a tough job. They should be paid a fair wage.” olin muidugi sunnitud võtma ette eestikeelsete linnunimede andmebaasi ja endale tabeli tegema, sest ega ma ikka ei teadnud küll, et bittern on hüüp ja dipper vesipapp, näiteks. siin sain ka selgust, mis vahe on viul, tuuletallajal, kalakotkal, rabapistrikul ja puna-harksabal (klge, Eestis vist ei ole puna-harksaba? elus pole enne kuulnud seda nime. jääb mulle seega igaveseks meelde kui sõna, mille õppisin enne ära kõmri kui eesti keeles. barcud coch, pole tänu väärt). enne olid nad kõik mu jaoks ühed kullid kõik. It’s called a theremin and has been most famously used in 1950s science-fiction films such as The Day the Earth Stood Still. Bill is one of the few modern representatives of the instrument, and has presented a Radio 4 show called “Good Vibrations: The Story of the Theremin”, and written an article on the subject for the Guardian.

Unfortunately, despite respectable viewing figures, Channel 4 have decided not to commission a new series. The programme did receive a lot of praise, however, and has left a positive impact in the environments of many endangered British animals. I’ve bunched these three together as they all appeared on Bill Bailey’s Sky 1 TV show as mentioned above, and can be seen on the RSPB blog in photos. PHIL LIGGETT As Bailey tells it, the goose, still covered by the blanket, lifted its head until an outline of itsbeak was level with the gun.

Another link to US politics, Laura Bush listed birdwatching amongst her pastimes according to a post at the American Hiking Society blog. Alison Steadman He did his first stand-up gig in the early 1980s as a teenager and has made a living being funny ever since.

This is a beginners guide more than anything else, Bill recommends starting bird-watching by try to find a pigeon, so if you know anybody showing an interest in birds then this will be a great gift for them. My youngest daughter is going to read this next and I think she’ll enjoy it mainly because of the interesting gruesome facts included, a bit like the horrible histories books. The guitarist for British Sea Power contributed to the Big Garden Birdwatch blog run by the Guardianin 2009, although he didn’t have much joy, writing “ It’s drizzling in Brighton, and there’s not alot of action in my tiny city garden at the moment. I regularly put bread, meal worms and table mix out, so i’m hoping there will be a few hungry regulars braving the rain.”
