Babies who are still being breastfed, but who are also starting to drink out of a bottle, should use the smallest size. Finally, babies who are six months old and older generally finish the bottle between ten and twenty minutes. However, if your baby seems frustrated and impatient during feedings, you might want to experiment with a faster nipple flow.

so switching to a higher flow nipple will improve the intake for the little one and keep them satisfied. Just to showcase how much flow rate varies by manufacturer, here is a guide to some of the bigger brands teat flows. Paying attention to how your infant drinks and reacts is critical to determining when to switch Avent nipple sizes. When To Switch To Another Nipple Flow Level? (upgrade level) Then again, if your child is struggling to finish the bottle after forty minutes, the baby probably needs a larger nipple size. For instance, if you see milk running down your child’s face, this could be an indication of too fast of a flow through the nipple. The Variable Flow teat (with the I, II and III markings on the teat) is recommended for babies of 3+ months old. This teat has a slot cut into it which provides an adjustable flow rate. The flow rate can be varied by turning the bottle to align the I, II or III markings on the teat with the baby's nose. This is called the Newborn nipple. It has one hole, which is easy to remember: one hole for one month old. The wide breast shaped teat promotes natural latch on similar to the breast, making it easy for your baby to combine breast and bottle feeding. Age can be an arbitrary number and reference point, though it is still very helpful for getting started. However in other instances I was stumped as to why their feeding had suddenly gone haywire and they were more agitated.

this could be a sign that the nipple size is too large, and the baby is not able to keep up with the flow of milk into his or her mouth. Avent nipples will help to regulate the flow of milk to your child. If your baby is struggling with their feeds – spluttering, choking coughing – or on the other side of the spectrum becoming agitated and fussy while eating, it could be time to change teats. It was only when I told my problem to another mom that I learned about nipple sizes. It was an awakening experience to learn the truth about nipple sizes, and I’d like to share that knowledge with other parents. The Slow Flow teat (with the number 2 on the teat) is recommended for babies of 1+ months old that are breastfed and bottle-fed. When I was a new parent, I was naïve about the world of bottle nipples. I didn’t know they came in different flow sizes. I just figured they were all the same. But you need to get one that matches your baby’s stage of development. Since I’ve been there, I can help you find out which Philips Avent Nipple Sizes you should be using for your baby.

Knowing when to switch Avent nipple sizes is not so challenging, so long as you are aware of how much or little your child is enjoying feeding. You almost don’t notice how much a teat can have become worn until you switch to a brand new one and feel the difference. Final thoughts on changing flow speeds In general, we recommend following the below guidelines for getting started on the appropriate size Avent nipple. The number 1 is recommended to use regardless of the babies age if alternating between breast and bottle is the practice. If your baby is not doing well on a particular flow rate, and you’ve tried changing it, it may be time to switch to another brand. Dr Brown’s
