Description

Told from the viewpoint of fifth grader Deja, who is living in a homeless shelter with her family, this is a powerful story about young people who weren't alive to witness this collapse of the Twin Towers, but begin to realize how much this disaster colors their every day lives. Pop suffers from some sort of illness that makes it difficult for him to do anything, much less get a job. In both cases, the dark side of Western progressivism—the hubris of cultural imperialism—briefly reared its head. The photo's caption read, "A person falls headfirst after jumping from the north tower of the World Trade Center.

There's Déja's homeroom teacher, who was in fifth grade herself when the towers fell, and Déja's father, who was a doorman in one of the buildings and still suffers from breathing in the dust. Immediately her fifth grade classmates are given an assignment about home, with the end goal that eventually this project will transform in to being about the change of New York’s skyline fifteen years ago. Briley had asthma and would have known he was in danger when smoke began to pour into the restaurant.Pure' is their third full-length, recently released via the Swedish label Temple of Torturous after their succesful Black Heart Bleeds Black (2012) and Monolito (2009). From 2015-2018, Mary Ann was a member of the National Council of Teachers of English's Orbis Pictus Award for Outstanding Nonfiction (K-8) Committee, serving two years as chair.

I'm always on the lookout for authentic "high-low" books, and this might make a great choice for readers outside of the primary target audience. Set 15 years after the attacks of September 11, 2001, Towers Falling is a powerful tale about a classroom of students in Brooklyn who weren’t alive on 9/11 but come to understand the long-lasting effects the tragedy has had on their community, families and the world as a whole. The photograph gives the impression that the man is falling straight down; however, a series of photographs taken of his fall shows him to be tumbling through the air.

All books are PACKED CAREFULLY; we are also happy to gift wrap books (FREE) upon request, and to ship them with just a card. I wanted to like this book so much that I kept reading even when half way through the book the story was going nowhere and I was ready to go into insulin shock from the sappy sweetness of the dialogue. The book is clean, it does mention some drunk people at the shelter, but nothing specific, just in passing.

When her fifth-grade teacher hints that a series of lessons about home and community will culminate with one big answer about two tall towers once visible outside their classroom window, Deja can't help but feel confused. Neither Property will activate unless you have at least one other Cursed Item equipped that shares the same Positive Property. I would have vastly preferred this book with these characters if 9/11 entered the picture towards the beginning of the book and then see these heartfelt characters grow, change, and "grow into" their understandings of themselves as New Yorkers and as people. Dèja hates thinking about the past—her old best friend, her old neighborhood, her old home—yet the more she learns, the more she understands that this event affected her and every American. On the anniversary of September 11th, we are once again struck by how vivid our memories of that day are, and yet today’s children do not have those memories.Since its inception, multicultural New York City has been a beacon of hope for immigrants from around the world.
