Description

Having personally used this book to communicate divorce with younger family members, it is definitely a book I would recommend to any teacher etc! This message is conveyed in a meaningful way whilst being light hearted in the storyline approaching a difficult topic in a sensitive way.

This was a beautiful, a bit humorous, but also sad book about a boy and his parents who are going to separate. I think this book could be a very useful in the classroom, and read to nursery or reception children because it deals with such a relevant topic that any of them could experience. It is something I have seen happening in other books about divorce, and it always breaks my heart and makes me tear up. The subject matter is an extremely sensitive one, as it talks about divorce and the hardships that a child can face when they find out that their parents are splitting up. I think this would be a good book to offer children support who’s parents may be/ have split whilst giving other children a sense of empathy. However by removing the crack later in the story but still having the same whole page illustrations provides a key visual message that in time the situation does heal.

Even if a child has been raised by a single parent, their parents split before they were born for example, they could still benefit from a book like this. The illustrations in this book were also effective as they showed everything broken in half throughout the first half of the book where the main characters aim is to get his parents some glue to get back together. It would be a great recommendation to send home, or to read in a smaller, comfortable group, so that children feel they can ask questions, share their response and feelings and talk through these in a trusting environment. His parents have come undone and he wants to mend their marriage, stick their smiles back on and make them better. This book addresses many feelings and questions children may have related to such controversial themes. It might be an obvious metaphor, but it perfectly captures the feelings that children might be having, without being melodramatic or scary.
