About this deal

Really excellent book, found it useful after coming back to chess after a break, interspersed with key ideas and principles for all parts of your game. However, readers who already have some familiarity with the game will benefit a lot from its discussions of ideas which are fairly simple to understand but often difficult to apply in real games. I'm currently halfway through the book and plan to run through it again for any chapters that I score less than 80% correctly.

Só ressalto um detalhe: apesar de ser fácil acompanhar os primeiros capítulos, logo o livro fica bem difícil! The few references to Maizelis that exist in English describe him as a translator and endgame analyst, with special expertise in pawn endings and technical rook endings. Please remember it can take some time for your bank or credit card company to process and post the refund too. Approximately 60% of the Russian text appears in The Soviet Chess Primer; although I cannot read the Cyrillic lettering, it appears that some detailed opening analysis and sections on the history of chess were excised. Lasker wrote the forward to the original Russian edition and the famous coach and author Mark Dvoretsky has written the new one for this English translation, it's his favorite chessbook of all time.Well illustrated and explained games to showcase the essential principles (tactics, strategy, combinations, positional play) to apply to every chess game. This new edition of a timeless classic includes an original foreword from the 2nd World Champion, Emanuel Lasker, as well as an introduction from the most celebrated chess trainer of modern times, Mark Dvoretsky. It has inspired generations of Russians to take up the game, including arguably the two greatest players of all time, the 12th and 13th World Champions.

However, where this book shines is that it provides enough examples (of increasing complexity) that reading the book will help the reader begin to recognize when those tactics might become relevant. Following some of the sidelines might be a bit much if you’re really just starting out, but apart from that it’s very approachable and covers a lot of fundamental ideas. This is a great instructional technique as the student sees firsthand with positions they've gained familiarity with earlier that any given chess position will have multiple themes in it. Well it’s not a game collection but one book I think would be fantastic for starting out is Susan Polgar “Chess Tactics for Champions”, though it’s perhaps more intermediate than beginner. I wish I'd read it sooner as then it would have been my introduction to many of the concepts it contains. If you have a national chess federation ELO rating of 1300-1599 I highly recommend this fantastic book.

Though this book does begin with the basic rules of chess--and even teaches the reader how to read the book because it takes the time to explain algebraic chess notation right at the start--it quickly moves on to more advanced tactical and strategic ideas.Os exercícios também são muito difíceis desde o início, mas não são impossíveis, e ajudam muito a melhorar o cálculo. Garry Kasparov and Anatoli Karpov (former legendary world champions) have both praised it having learned from it when they were schoolboys.

Alekhine’s “my best games of chess” is a good start because games and notes are very clear and thorough. Nevertheless, as someone who remembers the white-hot rivalry of their world championship matches, I was startled when I received the new translation of Ilya Maizelis’ The Soviet Chess Primer from Quality Chess. Those world be my 3 picks, maybe also an easier tactics book before Polgar, not that it’s hard, but maybe it’s too much for a total beginner. The translation by John Sugden reads well, and – as one expects from Quality Chess – the production values are high. It should not surprise us that youthful attachment to cherished books would persist, and in this case the attachment is justified. Having already studied Simple Chess, How To Reassess Your Chess, Chess Fundamentals, and My System, I found little within this book that was new.
