Description

As a child I spent many hours reading and re-reading this book in the dark winter nights, dreaming of spring and to catch a Tench! A super book 'The Best of British baits' by Chris Sandford is well worth having a look at, some great pictures, catalogue info etc.

Whether he was writing or painting he was able to capture the moment, set the scene and draw us in to his world and we felt the tingle of excitement every time we believed that we too could catch that tench or a big roach or feel the power of a hard fighting barbel. At his side Peter learned watercraft, a love and respect for the natural landscape, and an immense amount about the many different facets of fish behaviour. The method that JohnH describes is known as a Nottingham cast and is absolutly fine until you are required to cast any sort of real distance, that is when you wish you had learned to Wallis/Avon cast. He could go fishing," Bernard suggested, and so one week Mirror readers saw Crabtree digging his allotment. Subsequently the Mirror's gardening guru was Mr Digwell and (not many people know this) at one time Paul Peacock, Jack Hargeaves' biographer, was Mr Digwell.year-old Tadhg from Oxford accompanies John to the riverbank for a series of lessons in watercraft and the signs of a healthy waterway. The pre-loved books are carefully cleaned and maintained offering a wide variety of general and specialist titles from children's to adults.

It just seems a bit strange though, especially as there is nothing to stop me fishing with prawns for chub, which is an equally good bait for Salmon.Due to the range of areas covered in this book it would be a lovely gift for any fisherman as no matter if they are an expert or a beginner there is something for everyone in this book. Faithful to the feel of the early printings, this book evokes excesses of nostalgia in the over-forties, and remains of great practical use to beginners.

Chip to tape at top of spine and mostly missing from spine edge, covers rather used, prize winner inscription to inside front cover. John guides his young protégé with good sound advice and simple tackle and tactics; it’s a reminder that fishing isn’t all gadgets and fancy rigs. Even though the tackle is a little dated since it was written in the 50's, the tactics and info on how to catch fish year round are still just as valid today as they were back then. You can change your choices at any time by visiting Cookie preferences, as described in the Cookie notice. This vintage guidebook is filled with articles, photographs and comics and will add so much character to any library it is placed in!

I bought this book as I'd heard a great deal about how it was an inspiration to many young anglers when it was first released in the form of newspaper segments. I acquired a copy of this latest print so as to preserve my original copy which is, I think, about 42 years old now. I get a kick out of taking out the old fiberglass rods every now and then, and I keep the first reel my dad bought me, a Zebco 202 as well as an old Mitchell spinning reel all oiled and ready to go. It is the comic strip story of a father who takes his son Peter on a series of angling adventures over the course of a year, fishing for a variety of species along the rivers and lakes of Britain. His weekly articles in the Mirror were not just a snap shot of angling but encompassed the passion, the excitement and the thrill of angling and the countryside. Any fisherman knows that the boy in the angler never dies and reading this book is like taking a trip back in time. This year I'm on to the Lazy Ike and I'm trying to scrounge up a few others like the original River Runt. WITH COLOUR ILLUSTRATIONS AND THE FAMILIAR B/W STRIP STORY TELLING STRAIGHT OUT OF THE OLF DAILY MIRROR FEATURE.
