Marie tells the story of how she was taken away from a poor, but happy and loving home life, to live in a convent - away from everyone and everything she holds dear. Now Marie has written a book, The Convent, with the help of journalists Ann and Joe Cusack, although it is so painfully evocative of the pain of her childhood years and the poverty her family had to endure, she struggles to read it. She isn't even allowed to keep her own name and the Convent is overseen by an utterly vicious and sadistic nun.

It’s possible that she was taken due to the family’s extreme poverty, or because of her mother’s struggles with depression and having ten children. I believe that Marie also wants to help others in similar sitations to prevent other children from getting as hurt as she was.It took me until my 30s when my grandmother, and two years later my father, both said apropos of nothing I can remember that my mother didn't love me.

The little girl who stepped into that car wasn't to know what unspeakable crimes she would suffer at the convent nor that she would not see her own parents for the next four years. What child can remember all the details that this little girl did particularly after such a long time? Marie, who worked in a bakery and now lives in Hathershaw, Oldham said the violence and cruelty escalated and she remembers sitting in her room "crying all night. I literally could not put this book down once I began reading, and was on the edge of my seat the entire way through as I flipped through the pages to see what happened next. She is given the name of Kibby (a shortened version of her surname) which breaks her heart as she feels she has no identity whatever.

Her hair was bluntly chopped, her clothes were taken away and her name was changed, although she was so seldom spoken to with civility there were times that she forgot she even had a name.
