Its a wonderful movement from Lady Bird and has opened up her showcasing of abilities to flaunt what ease she can do in terms of adaptation, scale and period aesthetic.

With her previous picture of Lady Bird being one of the strongest coming of age female films of the decade, her ease of comedy and drama with a young cast was well suited for such a story. The film is further helped by the stunning, luminous cinematography, which contrasts the rural idyll of New England with the teeming, still semi-built New York, each acting as the appropriate backdrop for the narrative arc and structure of the whole.In the past, everything feels warm and sincere, the orange glow of the fireplace and candles feeling comforting and refreshing.

Yet, life goes on in New England, where the four March sisters are growing up and discovering who they truly are.

Amy has a chance encounter with Theodore, a childhood crush who proposed to Jo but was ultimately rejected. Hardships abound but the girls always retain hope and strong family loyalty as each grows in her own way into a woman. For instance, we learn immediately that Jo has turned down Laurie, thereby removing all forward momentum from that storyline and making many of the historic scenes redundant. I love Little Women and Good Wives as books and I've just finished reading them, I watched this movie and it is some of Greta Gerwig's finest work, I loved it and I couldn't recommend anything more than I do this film. Greta Gerwig's adaptation of this well-loved and already much-filmed literary classic is in my opinion the most effective version so far, for it cleverly plays with time, allowing the viewer much greater insight into the various characters' journeys.

Somewhere towards the end, there’s a balance, where glimmers of beauty pierce through the trees to find the allure in life being an unpredictable ride. Gerwig’s aim was ‘to give a more modern take on women’s choices and life’ (according to the DVD Xtras).
