You can't help but feel things coming to a head and wonder what the fall-out will be, making Isabel Ashdown's Little Sister a disturbing yet truly compelling read. I found myself skimming over her chapters, trying to get through her groveling as quickly as possible. And if Jonah follows the trail of clues in her story, will they lead him to the missing girl—or distract him until it’s too late? It is accepted by you that Daunt Books has no control over additional charges in relation to customs clearance. I’ve no idea what kind of sandwich; I just said it, for something to say, to make her stop looking at me like that.

Emily is quite understandably cracking up under the pressure of her daughter’s disappearance, but there is a hint of mental instability.I see her now, aged four or five, casting aside her new red scooter, wanting instead my purple one; I was bewildered as she turned her back to me and stood at the low garden wall, unspeaking, taking these same shallow breaths, trying to contain herself. Nothing is ever quite what it seems though and neither sister appears to be a reliable narrator; one because she's only recently come back into the other's life, and the other because she's distraught, emotional, suspicious and heavily medicated.

There’s a doctor on the way,’ the plain-clothes officer says as she passes me a glass of water, indicating that we should move into the living room. Oh we all love a good psychological thriller, but you know there are those that you read all the time that kind of blend into one big bubble then there are those like Little Sister that stay with you, maybe because of one thing maybe because of several. The tension and intrigue is immediate and intense as Emily's baby daughter is suddenly missing while under the care of Jess, Emily's little sister. Batten down the hatches, the next year in books is going to be a blast, at the moment Trapeze have their eyes firmly on the dynamite. There’s someone with her; their head is tilted in concern, their hand resting on her shoulder, and even through the vapour of my dazed mind I can see that she is crying, from the way her chest rises and falls with each shuddering breath. She brilliantly shows us how much personality affects both the execution and the resolution of a transgression. A thoughtful, multi-layered and beautifully-written exploration of family dynamics with a dark mystery at its heart. The difficulty of picking a way through their stories is further compounded by an existing medical condition, erratic suspicions, unhelpful press intrusions, and the devastating secrets nurtured by other members of this all too modern-day family. It’s a tiny movement, but one I remember from earliest childhood, the way she’d turn inwards as she tried to keep it together, tried to hold it all inside.

With Police detectives now investigating Daisy's disappearance, we begin to get a different picture from this seemingly idyllic family, unfolding deceptions and long ago choices, the story ultimately revealing the shocking reasons behind Daisy's abduction as well as the underlying reason as to what tore these two sisters apart years ago. It’s a good story in its own right and one that does provide some additional – not essential, but nice to have – background information about the investigative team. Told alternately from the two sister’s point of view, Little Sister is a story of twists, turns and surprises, but more it’s the exploration of sibling relationships. Addictive, fast-paced and so expertly plotted that when I finished I had to read the beginning again, in awe at the twists.
