Description

The narrative was intense and suspenseful, and took its time building up toward the climax of the story. After a betrayal that sent their marriage into freefall, Hannah and Sam are desperate for a fresh start with their eight-year-old daughter Lily—and where better than picture-perfect Owl Cottage in beautiful Cornwall.

Relieved to have her youngest child back in her arms, breathing in the sweet scent of her hair, Gemma thinks the nightmare is over. One of my favourite tropes in thrillers is when the mysterious perpetrator is one of the narrators and I was happy to see it in this book. The way we learn about Gemma's past is through essay titles that disguise her confessions, like a diary, and I found these most interesting. You also get some chapters narrated by the private investigator, Matthew, who I actually liked more than all of the other characters in the book. The incorporation of the varying timeline does not lessen the pace, instead taking you down paths that draw you closer to the shooter, or more accurately who appears to be the shooter.

I do like multiple narrators if the author can make them all sound like different people — or objects; I’ve read books in which an object narrates. This grossly oversimplified understanding has created many complexities in our lives and taken away from us the very fundamentals of the joy of living. Under pressure to act quickly, the family hire a nanny to reduce stress but more is caused… This book was just brilliant. I think my biggest gripe was the secrets in general seemed a bit unnecessary, like characters thinking 'this might be relevant, but I won't tell anyone'.Soon, the carnage ensued and the character’s lives were uprooted by the crazy wind that left nothing unturned in its wake.

Reading this newest release makes me even more determined to check out Driscoll's other books in the future.I love the uncertainty of what the future will hold and the thousands of possibilities it leaves in its wake. The fig tree is there, too, when war breaks out, when the capital is reduced to ashes and rubble, when the teenagers vanish. In Love Is Not Enough, Mark’s first Audible Original, you’ll follow five real people over the course of six months as they navigate f--ked up romantic situations, ranging from dating app addiction to marital affairs to absurd fantasies. From the top ten bestselling author of The Secret Mother and The Child Next Door, this completely addictive psychological thriller of secrets, lies and betrayal will make you gasp out loud at the heart-stopping final twist. My thanks to Rhiannon Morris from FMcM for the place on the tour and for sending a proof copy of the book for review purposes.
