We have to fight them off ourselves,’ he said, and wondered if he would have done better to have stayed in the church.

It's clear to me that either Cornwell or his publisher no longer really care about Sharpe, because neither appear to have a continuity checker. Bernard Cornwell brings all his considerable descriptive skill to bear on the infamous Battle of Assaye, described by General Arthur Wellesley himself as the battle of which he was most proud.

Granted, this is the first Peninsular War adventure we've had since 2006, so mistakes on Cornwell's part are bound to happen. Plausible characters and you get a great perspective on the historical background to a lively period. There are plenty of other less important things that contradict the other books and the characters don't particularly seem like themselves either. This book uses the real-life Battle of Almaraz which took place 18-19 May 1812 where the British and Portuguese were fighting the French in Almaraz, Spain. I was fairly disappointed, don’t get me wrong the ending helps to make the book a bit more enjoyable but there are far too many inconsistencies in this book.

In 1992, Smith participated in the United Nations Environmental Programme’s exhibition ‘The Illustrator and the Environment’. General Hill requests assistance in getting the Spanish partisans on side as well as an advance scout to gauge the French strength at the three fortresses around the town. From the strife and division of the Dark Ages to the blood and bravery of the Napoleonic Wars, Bernard Cornwell’s has been bringing history to life since the early Eighties when he created the unlikely hero renegade-turned-officer Richard Sharpe. This book at times feels like a novelisation of the TV adaptation and it leaves a lot to be desired.Seamus Heaney’s deeply felt interpretation, widely acknowledged as the greatest Beowulf translation of modern times, is presented in parallel with the Old English verse in this fabulous Folio edition. The TV show always liked to put emphasis on Sharpe and his riflemen, but in the books, they were always a backdrop to the greater South Essex regiment, and the machinations of Wellington's army in Spain. We import first-rate saltpetre from India and the French are forced to scrape it from the walls of cesspits, poor devils. I would have preferred if Sharpe had allowed her a greater role instead of going against her suggestions, all too often, and giving her short answers.

After publishing eight books in his ongoing Sharpe series, Cornwell was approached by a production company interested in adapting them for television. Also surely siege ladders are likely cut and measured near and well within sight of a Fort and not dragged for miles on a march. And only Sharpe – with just his cunning, his courage and a small band of rogues to rely on – stands in their way . Richard Sharpe, the central protagonist, accepts the command from General Hill to destroy a bridge, preventing the French from crossing. If there's a Tom Garrard and a Tom Gerrard who Sharpe's known since he was a Private, then that's a hell of a coincidence, and an odd choice on Cornwell's part.
