Rachel Gold makes stunning jewelry and is trying to get her business off the ground, with her father providing both moral and financial support when needed. A Police Inspector gets involved when a barrel of bones, connected to the house that Libby inherited. While staying at Henry’s apartment, Lucy had this brilliant idea to go on Safari to meet up with Phin again. An above average read, which I think fans of The Family Upstairs will appreciate, but I preferred The Family Upstairs.

We also see how deep the relationship is between Lucy and Henry, how they work within their damaged psyches to be there for one another. It is a credit to Jewell that I was able to keep up with a story that has a multitude of characters with multiple aliases and backstories with the help of the handy family tree she includes at the beginning of the book. I hadn’t enjoyed the experience and didn’t like the resultant book and thus was very adamant at first when readers were asking for a sequel to The Family Upstairs that I would not do one. It doesn’t have an official title yet, but it is entirely different to The Family Remains, in terms of both scope and setting. I had mentioned her so fleetingly in the first novel that I felt like she was just waiting to be brought fully to life and I wouldn’t know who she was or what her marriage had been like until I started writing her.Lucy and Henry have kept in contact with adult Libby, as they knew she would inherit the money at the age of 25.

While the narrators were good and did their best, there was not much to pull out of this one besides a lot of f words and murky convoluted details. A: I wrote this sequel in an effort to comprehensively complete the stories of all of the characters from both books. She adds tension with dual timelines and the Police Inspector’s investigation uprooting Lucy’s goal of reuniting her family.Libby is also keen to track down her birth father – Phineas (Phin) Thomsen (son of cult leader David Thomsen) – who has been missing for over twenty-five years.

I feel sad to say goodbye to this cast of characters, because as dysfunctional as they are, they make for SUCH good reading! Trouble starts even before the honeymoon is over, and Rachel realizes the man she has married has a very dark side. The bag of bones that has been found leads DI Owusu to a mansion in Chelsea where, as we know, very disturbing things happened to a forever bonded group of people. When he shows her just what a monster he is, she leaves him and decides to wait out the two-year period to divorce him with no explanation required by law.
