The format’s pretty predictable – small group of precocious children get into trouble while uncovering smuggling rings. In the car after picking up Philip, Jack and Lucy-Ann from the train station, she spots Philip's mouse and tries to dislodge it from his shirt collar. It stuck to the book in general (far more so than the 90s series did), but the added scenes with the Navy were unnecessary.

Like her brother, she has a tuft of hair standing up atop her head, but she shares neither his gift in attracting, nor his love for, animals, especially the small creeping types (mice, insects, snakes etc. Her husband is a Quentin-like figure — an absent-minded historian who spends most of his time working in his study, even forgetting about meals. Before long, they are drawn to the mysterious Isle of Gloom in the distance and are determined to find a way to get there and explore it. In my c50s reprint, the servant is a sullen, slightly mad black man with rolling eyes, and his name is Jo-Jo.

The quality is not brilliant but I expect that it isn’t really any worse than when it was first released. The Island of Adventure needs to be re-released, preferably a full HD remastered version, so that everyone can come to love the many colourful catchphrases from this fantastic film: "I hate mackerel pie", "She flew in through the window? There are literally thousands of birds there, and Jack swears he caught sight of a Great Auk, thought to be extinct. A little like the start of the Famous Five – the main characters meet for the first time in the first few chapters.
