Thanks to the Switch's adoption of USB-C, the console can theoretically be charged up by a wider range of products. The most common light switches are white plastic. But there’s a wide range of other, more decorative colours and finishes available, so homeowners can match their switches to their décor. We love smart lighting systems here at TechRadar, but what if all you want is to add smartphone or voice assistant control to your existing lights? That’s where the Tapo Smart Switch comes in. This replaces your existing wall-mounted light switch with one that functions in just the same way, but can also be controlled by app and voice. It gives some flexibility to the module, although note that you can’t get any dimming control with this device. In my living room, I use the Philips Hue Wall Switch Module behind the nice looking switch for on/off and basic scene selection. I’ve then got a Hue Dimmer Switch hidden out of sight that I use for dimming.

Signify's Philips Hue has been one of the most popular smart lighting systems for the past couple of years. So, it's no surprise that the Smart Dimmer Switch makes it really easy to control your Hue lights. The second cause is faulty tech. Now and then a Hue Dimmer Switch comes out of the factory with a design flaw somewhere in the wiring. These flaws could be sapping your battery life. The batteries themselves could also be flawed or just very old. In any case, if fresh batteries don’t restore your switch, it’s time to look over that warranty. After 12 or so seconds have passed, let go of the Power button, then press it one more time. This should reboot the Switch and turn the console on. If your console has turned on, try connecting the charger's USB-C port to the handheld again. Be wary of third-party chargers The first thing you'll notice about the Eve Light Switch is its simplistic (and stylish) design. It doesn't draw attention to itself with multiple buttons or dozens of LED lights, but instead opts for a single large button and a single LED indicator. And since all your schedules are saved locally on the Eve Light Switch, you won't need an external hub or internet connection to keep things running smoothly. Yes, but only some can. As you may have seen from the above products, some are designed to work only with certain smart lighting systems, like those by Wiz or Philips Hue. Others, however, like the Tapo Smart Switch by TP-Link, are designed to control your existing, non-smart lights. They replace your existing light switches and operate just like a manual switch, but with the added ability to be controlled remotely with a smartphone app, voice assistant, or pre-programmed schedule.

With the included bridge, you'll be able to connect up to 50 Lutron devices to it from additional dimmer and switches to Lutron's Serena smart shades. The switch itself looks high-tech, with several buttons laid out to control the numerous options Caséta offers. Lutron has gone for function over fashion for the most part with this dimmer: The white and gray buttons are front and center, not hidden by touch-sensitive controls, as is the case with other dimmers in this category. Smart light switches are relatively easy to test. In each case, we added the switch to a lighting system (such as Philips Hue or Wiz), then configured the switch using the companion phone app. We played around with each switch to see what options were available and how it responded to different circumstances. We also set them up with voice assistants and other smart home systems, where applicable. It’s always important to do your research before buying switches to ensure you’re getting the right product for your needs.

If a light fixture is controlled by more than one switch — for example, when you have a light switch at the top and bottom of a set of stairs — then you'll need to get a three-way smart light switch. However, if there's only one switch controlling an outlet, you can get a "single pole" switch.
