At first glance I noticed the air ports on the S horn were not covered and were exposed to the outside of the engine. I compared it to my HD horn and found the HD horn had a chrome metal housing covering the air ports. I went ahead with the installation thinking nothing more of it. For use off the road, there are a number of “funny” car horns that are available. Personally, the all time favorite and the best funny car horn has to be the Dixie horn, which is a car horn everyone loves. Upon inspection, one of the two functioned perfectly. Otherwise, I’ve heard from a very few people who jumped to the conclusion that they had a defective horn, but actually hadn’t grounded the horn to metal as required of any electrical device.

Although OEM car horns can be bought from the dealerships, they often come with an expensive price tag. OEM horn replacements are fine if you don’t want to increase the noise, but if you are reading this article, you are probably interested in the loudest on the market. If this is the case, you have the option of choosing a loud car horn with or without a compressor. The benefit of choosing a horn with a compressor is that it’ll be much louder. Please refer to LX-150: Installing a 12V power Outlet as well as LX150: Installing a Tiny Tach For instructions on removing the Horn Cover, Legshield liner, and all wiring. Apparently, the Nautilus can fail early, suddenly or unexpectedly after an indeterminate amount of time. But the loudest motorcycle horn in the world is useless if it can’t be trusted, and based on our experience with the Stebel Nautilus Compact horns, we’d rather take a few less dB but have something that’s going to work when needed. The horn itself is compact and will fit on most faired and unfaired bikes without too much effort However, as with anything that isn’t OEM, some degree of craftsmanship is required to mount it securely. It’s a compressor based car horn that has a compact design to fit in all locations under the bonnet. The compressor itself is self-contained and the horn is a direct replacement. Hint Two: adding a small piece of aluminum or steel “L” (a.k.a. angle iron) with a hole for the mounting bolt will prevent the horn bouncing off if the bolt loosens Star washers and jam nuts are a good addition. Conclusion Our Stebel Nautilus Compact was inoperative right out of the box, so Stebel has some work to do on the quality of these horns. Not recommended.

I am not an "Inspector Gadget" type of person ... so I have a small question: I saw that there are 2 different relays in the both posts, but is it possible to connect both the Horn and the 12V outlet to the same relay and on the same cables wired to the battery? Or they have to be put on different cables and relays? The easy installation and outstanding performance of this horn makes it a favourite of ours, being a perfect solution when replacing your T5 or T6 horns. The single unit means that the entire horn setup is relatively compact and suitable for many engine bars or grilles. Indeed, if grounding is so critical with Stebel horns, then that is an issue also. We have never had a grounding problem with any other brand of horns we have reviewed. I go to the beach a couple of times a week and on the way out stop by local car wash to rinse off salt and sand. Upon first washing after installing S horn, the horn quit working. At first I did not suspect the bike washing, but later determined that must be the problem-although I tried to be careful around the horn, I must have accidentally squirted those naked air ports with water. I separated the compressor from the trumpet, and installed the compressor in front of the battery in an upright position.

The photos showing the Stebel horn installed are too dark. I've included several angles, so hopefully you can tell what I've done. You should run a new 12 gauge red wire directly from the battery to terminal 30 of the relay. There should be a fuse on that line near the battery.

From “P.E.” (May 2013): “I’ve sold hundreds of Stebel horns over the past 4-5 years. As best as I can recall, I’ve replaced two units that were reported to be defective. The relay and the horn, both have a ground wire. I saw in another post that the ground wire from the relay goes to the negative part of the battery..is that correct? what about the ground wire from the horn? Based on this and our experience with the other Stebel Nautilus we tried, we can only give this Nautilus a “Not Recommended”. We’ve read many reports from owners on problems with the Stebel Nautilus Compact, so until someone can convince us that the issues have been resolved, these get a “Not Recommended” rating.Installation can be a major issue, partially because the shape is very complex and doesn’t lend itself to mounting alternatives. The Tornado Car Horn by Marco is the loudest car horn you can buy at 151dB. This not only beats the competitors, it dominates them by a country mile. There is no additional power supply required and this car horn can fitted to all cars with a 12 volt electrical supply. The choice of noise outputs between horns differ but most people simply require a direct replacement but there are others wanting the loudest car horn possible.
