Description

The film has an ‘R’ rating, and the roughest it gets is some flashes of simulated sex at the orgies. Random breasts are flashed in mastershots so crowded with action that we don’t know where to look or what’s important.

This is a period-based film that has a specific visual aesthetic which comes through quite naturally in this Ultra HD rendering. It’s a stylish visual film, that adheres to color grading and cinematography which is designed to underscore its thematic tone. Color reproduction is consistent, with primaries like blue, red and green appearing richer, and more delineated. Secondary hues look great, although not appreciably better. The increase in resolution is appreciable, especially wide-angle shots which look simply terrific. Close-ups tend to offer refinement and deeper resolvable texture on surfaces and physical features compared to the Blu-ray. The differences, while not staggering, are easily discernible. I like Damien Chazelle as a filmmaker. I love his artistic choices in La La Land, Whiplash and First Man. I only ever saw the teaser trailer for Babylon and, other than the presence of Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie, there wasn’t much that left an impression. Fast forward to my request and receipt of it for review. I really hadn’t heard anything very positive from those that had seen it but, I had to give it its due. Babylon comes to Ultra HD Blu-ray from Paramount Home Entertainment featuring 2160pHEVC encoded video and lossless Dolby Atmos/TrueHD 7.1 channel sound. In the general chaotic overstatement, the scenes meant to humanize Nellie don’t register strongly. Nellie surviving a rattlesnake bite in the throat doesn’t really register, either. That’s what happens with ‘reality’ is so flexible: will some critic claim that Babylon is really a subjective fantasy? Movies are shown being filmed using sunlight for illumination, on canvas-covered open-air stages, a technique that by 1926 had been long abandoned. Even the crowded, multi-set silent shoots in Singin’ in the Rain are filmed on big interior stages. Manny is clearly moved beyond tears. We feel like someone’s thrown a pie in our faces. The real movie we just saw is about people screaming m_____f______ and f____, with the only message being that Hollywood is s___.

The 4K UHD Steelbook release of ‘Babylon’ (which was the version sent from the studio for review) features alternate artwork and a nice sturdy and glossy Steelbook case, as well as including a Blu-ray copy of the film. The film will also be available in a standard 4K UHD release (although no Blu-ray copy of the film is included). The special features are provided on a second bonus Blu-ray Disc, with the 30-minute ‘making of’ documentary anchoring the inclusions. Everything else are very brief featurettes on the production and some 9-minutes of extended and deleted scenes that do not bring much more. Audio: English: Dolby Atmos; English: Dolby TrueHD 7.1; French: Dolby Digital 5.1; Spanish: Dolby Digital 5.1; English: Dolby Digital 5.1 MPAA Rating: R for strong and crude sexual content, graphic nudity, bloody violence, drug use, and pervasive language.. The film itself is also an exercise in excess as, from the dawn of the sound movies forward, it pulls in various directions, but never without leavingA Panoramic Canvas Called Babylon — The cast and crew discuss the inspiration and motivation behind the original story and development of this epic, 15 years in the making. The last scenes with Toby Maguire were hard to believe, just like the party at the beginning, is that what happens to people with money, they get bored with things and go off the deep end ?? workspace and the evolving lifestyles and life events that define them both on camera and off of it. The film is bloated and struggles to hold direction The big, colorful and noisy Babylon is oppressively off-putting, and no deep thought is required to explain why it wasn’t a hit. Word of mouth likely did the job, as most audiences would find it unpleasant at best and at worst intolerable. Personal tastes vary, but I know nobody who would think the movie’s excesses were entertaining. If I were to take a date to this picture, within three minutes I’d be telling the person, ‘it’s perfectly okay if you want to walk out right now.’ As for myself, I’m terminally curious. Brad Pitt and Margot Robbie are favorites. Babylon may do much better on disc and streaming than it did in theaters — a lot of moviegoers out there are just as curious as we are.
