OCA degrees are awarded by The Open University for students registering for the first time with OCA from August 2022. spent several years using the Camera Lucida to reduce the large prints to octavo size (1/8th size) for a more affordable version of the avian catalog. However, earlier this year when I was browsing Kickstarter, which is a crowd-funding platform to champion new inventions and ideas through mass public funding, I came across the Neolucida. Funny though, through years of photographic print spotting and retouching I have found that I have a very steady hand and excellent hand eye coordination, yet the slightest attempt to draw even with the aid of my Neolucida failed. But your brain blends the two views, making it look like your subject is "projected" onto your paper.

The only competition was another garage innovator and a UK-based company, both of which have since vanished. In 1833, while in Italy with his good friend William Henry Fox Talbot, that he became witness and accomplice to the most revolutionary moment in imaging. Their travels, documented by Catherwood and his camera lucida and printed with fantastic detail, inspired new interest in Mayan culture and expeditions of Central America.

I used mine to sketch a pencil with a radical skull head he had given me as a gift and presented him with the cool tool and sketch over takeout Chinese on our back porch. An enthusiastic artist and draughtsman in his early years, he became a maker of drawing apparatuses.

OCA students who registered before August 2022 can choose to be awarded by The Open University, or by the University for the Creative Arts (up to January 2024). Unlike most sailors, he kept journals throughout his career providing first hand accounts of distant explorations. He had the habit of signing his drawings with an advertisement for his invention, inscribing his drawings “drawn by Cornelius Varley with his Graphic Telescope” or sometimes simply “P. Some scholarship had suggested the possibility that Caillebotte, trained in naval architecture, had used various precision tools for his art. The NeoLucida is inspired by a long history of optical drawing tools, modernized using 21st century manufacturing and materials.I use a pencil at arms length to layout a page and get proportions of a landscape like a photo - my eyes are an imperfect camera (but sometimes the distortions are part of the art). Yet there are many artists out there where the actual act of making is integral to the work, as if the final piece is almost akin to a byproduct. As a bonus, the entire DrawLUCY line is compatible with the Photo Enlarger accessory, opening up a whole new world of creative possibilities. Indeed, the device is so effective in assisting accurate life-drawing that, according to the controversial Hockney-Falco hypothesis, its now believed that many of the most admired drawings of the 19th Century, such as the Neoclassical portraits of Jean-Auguste-Dominique Ingres, could only have been made with a camera lucida.

All these design upgrades make the NeoLucida Plus easier to use and provide advanced features for both beginning and experienced artists alike. They published Incidents of Travel in Central America (1841) and Views of Ancient Monuments in Central America (1844) to great acclaim. For full details on this work, and other deep dives into this magnificent painting, see the Art Institute of Chicago Online Scholarly Catalogue. He remarked in 1833: “when the eye was removed from the prism—in which all looked beautiful—I found that the faithless pencil had only left traces on the paper melancholy to behold. The camera lucida is a 19th century drawing aid, like a prism on a stick, that lets you trace whatever you see. He looks in, makes a few marks to get proportions correct, then looks up at his subject, then to his paper to draw. These special edition pencils come in three graphite formulations: Firm, Balanced, and Soft (corresponding to Blackwing’s “602,” “Pearl,” and “Matte”).
