With 40 years experience in the horticultural industry, where better to obtain gardening advice than from Cowell's, the family garden centre. Sow cosmos seed from February to May at a depth of 3mm (1/8in) in a good quality seed compost, and cover the seeds with a very fine sprinkling of vermiculite. Gently tuck your seeds into the soil, making sure they’re cozied up at around 20°C to encourage speedy sprouting.

But here’s a pro tip to avoid leggy plants: once those seeds have successfully sprouted, give them a slightly cooler environment. Don’t forget to provide them with plenty of light, as sometimes a windowsill just won’t cut it in providing the brightness these seedlings crave. Unfortunately, cosmos is grown as an annual but the good news is that it’s super easy to grow from seed again in the following spring.I sowed batches of four seeds of 'Apricot Lemonade' in 7cm pots on the windowsill in April, moved them into a sheltered spot outside when they came through and then planted out the potfuls, without breaking them up, at the end of May. Stake and tie cosmos plants if necessary during the growing season, water regularly and dead-head to prolong the flowering season.

While every effort has been made to describe these plants accurately, please keep in mind that height, bloom time, and color may differ in various climates. Early 20th-century gardeners had to be content with a fleeting flower or two before the frost came to claim them all. The newest (and to me the loveliest) of the new breedings of cosmos trialled in the garden here – soft, ethereal and quiet. Deadhead faded Cosmos flowers regularly to encourage more blooms to be produced throughout the summer. With its bushy growth habit, Apricot Lemonade is not only a delight in your garden but also perfect for creating lovely floral arrangements in smaller vases.Dobies strives to ensure that all its plants are delivered to you in the perfect condition for planting. Gorgeous Cosmos with burnished apricot and peach petals with raspberry pink centres, edged with the same pink. Very easy to grow from seed, and they will give you many, many flowers- the more you cut the more they give. So, whether you’re a flower enthusiast or a gardening novice, Apricotta’s vibrant and inviting hues will make it a cherished addition to your garden.

Gradually harden off before planting out in May 30-45cm (12-18") apart once all risk of frost has passed. When you are selecting the right spot, keep in mind that this cosmos easily becomes 100 centimeters tall!

When seedlings are large enough to handle, transplant into 7cm (3″) pots and grow them on in cooler conditions until large enough to plant outdoors. I love this as a cut flower and it’s compact enough to be perfect in containers too, dreamy mixed with Phlox 'Crème Brûlée'. Individual blooms don’t last long in the vase, about 4-6 days, but each stem is loaded with multiple blossoms that open over a period of a week. Eden Brothers’ Cosmos Apricot Lemonade is lovely in the field, but if you can bear to cut a few stems, makes for a stunning arrangement in the vase.
