Description

The majority of pages are undamaged with some creasing or tearing, and pencil underlining of text, but this is minimal. With such acute lucidity and intellectual elegance, Eisendrath has mapped out an unlikely geography of feeling and ideas that culminates into a passion for the life of the mind and the life of books. There are loads of brilliant non-fiction books that can teach your child about the world, as well as being entertaining, funny and gorgeous to look at. Golden threadlines tie each part to the next: a rupture of time in a Pisanello painting; Montaigne’s practice of revision in his essays; a segue through Vivian Gordon Harsh, the first African American head librarian in the Chicago public library system; a brief history of prose style; a meditation on the active versus the contemplative life; the story of Sarapion, a fifth-century monk; the persistence of the pastoral; image-making and thought; reading Willa Cather to her grandmother in her Chicago apartment; the deviations of Walter Benjamin’s “scholarly romance,” The Arcades Project. I don't consider myself a religious person, though this book was written in a religious way, I can assure that that's not the point.

Zach was such an inspiration (and continues to be) for so many in this world, and I'm glad his mom, Laura, wrote this book to be shared with the world. Clouds (like those painted on the ceiling of the New York Public Library’s Rose Reading Room, which also grace the cover of this book) bridge the gap between divine and daydream. The first two print runs sold out completely and in 2020 it has been re-printed, funded by The de Laszlo Foundation. I loved that even though Zach had limited time on this earth, he wanted to spend as much of it as he could with his family and friends. Laura is a force of nature and shows strength in the middle of all the adversary that comes, she bears it all on these vulnerable pages and it was an honour to be able to read it all. He’s put together a dazzling portfolio of photos that capture the different varieties and formations of clouds. The main character is a bright young man who has to go through the challenges of being a senior in high school--with cancer. Is the only word that I can think of to describe the collection of my two books and two packs of 3-D cards.

Media in this book are not defined as just more technological supplements to human beings but as a source that opens an extension for human self-knowledge. Take it with you on walks and have it handy in the garden so that you can enjoy sky-gazing every day. This could be a great jumping-off point to explore the skies, not just the clouds you’re able to perceive when the sun is out but also what happens when the moon comes out. So when I happened to chance upon the updated version of the book, previously published as 'Fly a Little Higher' written by Zach's mother Laura Sobiech being available to request on NetGalley, I put in a request to read it.

His spectacular portfolio of pictures captures a variety of cloud forms and shapes, ranging from cottony-soft cumulus clouds to frightening, whirling funnels, as well as a number of optical effects seen in the heavens above. I can't imagine writing about the death of my beloved child and the story does jump around a bit but the message is important and kudos to Laura Sobiech for sharing her heart and bringing Zach's voice and legacy to light.
