Her broaching of topics often perceived as taboo (hello, anal stimulation and the trauma of an unregretted abortion) can feel brave, but in an overwhelming and more important way feel completely necessary for the continuation of the narrative of the book and the broader societal conversation. This month, I attended the Unbound proof party at Cheltenham Literature Festival, where Lucy-Anne was one of the authors, discussing her imminent memoir. Although the inconsistencies feel forgivable and the best course of action feels like it’s just to ignore them. But for Lucy-Anne Holmes, the sex she was having wasn’t good enough and she didn’t feel great about it.

We all must do better and make our sex lives as fulfilled as we want them to be, not what other people or society imply, demand, or suggest, and that comes through loud, clear and unambiguously. I wish British men and women could speak to each other easily and openly about sex, just like the Germans seem to. It’s brilliant and I can only say that if you don’t read this book then you’re missing out (seriously! In this no-holds-barred memoir, Holmes tackles what happens when a woman takes the time to explore what’s important to them and also to have faith in themselves for finding out. Unflinchingly confronts the reality of women’s complex sexual lives without patronising or preaching, and best of all it will make you laugh yourself silly at the same time! This presents a nicely accessible way for people to read about concepts and therapies that they wouldn’t normally pick up a book on.

A lot of the author's thoughts, feelings and experiences really struck home to me and it was so reassuring to read them. Using a largely comic tone, the author goes through her personal journey to become more engaged with, and intentional about, her own sex life and pleasure, resulting in an autobiographical work that's both entertaining and thought-provoking at the same time. I loved this book; it’s enlightening, straight from the heart and well pretty much life change going in some ways.
