Very good insight to the pair with a fair bit of new info I didn’t know, a difficult but necessary book in my opinion which I liked. In this book, many artefacts become public for the first time, including photographs from Ian Brady's Tartan album', police interviews and witness statements, which shed vital new light on Brady, Hindley and the dangerous cocktail their union became. Cook pays respect to the victims and their families the best way he can, while still maintaining the story’s integrity and reality. Printed here for the very first time are photographs of Myra Hindley during her incarceration released to the author from Home Office files held at the National Archives. Most of us on this site have seen a few things in our time in uniform but the calculated, coordinated actions of this pair related in this book still have the power to shock.

The book has much in common with the genre of writing known as New Journalism since it narrates an actual murder case through the author's own creative interpretations and idiosyncratic literary style. An original, feminist dissection of the local culture, media circus and police investigation surrounding the Yorkshire Ripper case. Beyond Belief, an uncanny feat of re-creation of the minds, hearts, and motivations of the two killers, is the story of this case.

The victims: Pauline Reade, Lesley Ann Downey, John Kilbride, Keith Bennett, and Edward Evans were aged between 10 and 17 years old. Signs do not scream, Serial Killer in the making, and hindsight is a marvelous thing, but I cannot help but wonder if some earlier intervention might have changed the course of history, and these two then may never have met? I like reading up about serial killers and unsolved murders and I like delving into the psychology of all things horrific.

Told respectfully, yet captivatingly throughout, I found “The Moors Murders – The Full Story Of Ian Brady and Myra Hindley” to be THE most fascinating study of what many consider to be the most disturbing crimes of the 20 th century that I have ever read – and for me, it has now replaced Devils Disciples, and even the canonical, Beyond Belief as THE definitive study of Brady and Hindley. It changed the course of his life as it was there that the teacher Sarah Grace Cooke, recognizing his literary talent, encouraged him and helped him win a scholarship to Oxford, where he attended the college of Christ Church. Williams brings the mid-Sixties of Britain shockingly to life in a startling abundance of mundane, often poignant, daily details. I've seen TV documentaries about the Moors Murderers, but this is the first time I've read a book on these terrible crimes.Occasionally I wasn´t totally gripped but there was no doubting Williams' methodology has well-preserved the times and the people involved. Ian Brady and Myra Hindley are notorious in the UK for their crimes- this book gives a rare and fascinating look into the couple and some aspects of their lives and evidence that has not been previously made public. Be prepared to be fully immersed in their worlds, from childhood events all the way to their court case and beyond.

On a different level but no less disturbing to me was the freedoms that their notoriety seemed to allow them in prison. Even to the point of having very workable escape attempts planned in Hindleys case with the collusion of many other actors including her Prison Officer lover. By using the Web site, you confirm that you have read, understood, and agreed to be bound by the Terms and Conditions.Imagine losing your daughter and loved one and seeing a part of her body in this unbelievably dreadful situation being published in a book.

Aside from that, there is so much detailed information in this book and it makes for both horrifying but fascinating reading. The four stars isn't because I 'enjoyed' the book, but because it's a well written, though horrifying, look at a topic that is so shocking you don't want to believe it. I truly did hold on, until the recounting of the sexual crimes committed by Ian Brady in his youth started. This was the first book that I ever read on the infamous Moors Murderers and I must say that it has had me gripped and intrigued on the subject now since I first read it 26 years ago!

I only wish we could have learned more about their victims, who after all are the important ones here. That the author had minimal contact with most of the individuals involved in the case—and had therefore seen fit to invent fictitious scenes and dialogue, and embellish certain details to account for what was not publicly known at the time—has also been a source of criticism.
