I have to give it 4 stars, because it is well written, and the pacing and setup are all done very well.

Bennett has contributed to Captain America, Amazing Spider-Man and Thor, and worked extensively at DC Comics, including on 52.Ewing knew how to pace this comic, with every final page of an issue finishing on either a cliffhanger or dramatic moment, so it was fun to read serially; this is the first time I’ve read it through, start to finish, but that brought to the fore some of the series’ strengths and weaknesses both. don't worry, big guy, there's antibiotics for that now) you can’t help thinking hmm maybe this comic isn’t deep and meaningful, maybe it’s actually just kitsch? It builds with excellent pacing and it shows the darker side of the world, the creepy moonlit crack houses and mountainside caves.

This omnibus also reprints the tie-in series that Ewing wrote, Gamma Flight, which suuuuuuucks, thus providing further evidence of how important Bennett was to the main series. Definitely recommended if you are a Hulk fan or want to know the character in a way more complex way than "The green dude that says Hulk smash".

S.Avengers; and joined the writing team for the "No Surrender" storyline in Avengers, which brought the Hulk back from the dead. As I said with my review of Fractions Hawkeye Omnibus 1, superhero comics are an unfriendly place for a newcomer such as myself; even with a storyline designed to welcome me in, the weight of history is suffocating, and I struggle to determine what information I'm supposed to understand, and what is something new. Unfortunately, those first five issues were deceptively good, because the story never reached those same highs in the following 10 issues. Then, however, they take a weird detour into morality, family strife, child abuse, DID personality splitting, 4+ different Hulk characters. This was my first Hulk comic experience, and there were many aspects of it that I could tell were meant for longtime fans. Ewing keeps up a steady stream of new angles, concepts and twists to keep it unpredictable, but not everything has a satisfying pay-off. The creature is driven by rage and pursued by an investigative reporter – in this case Jack(ie) McGee. It takes this pretty well-explored character and finds new, complex ways to look at him, all while featuring some of the most bone-chilling moments and visuals a Marvel book has ever put to print ( the artwork, primarily from Joe Bennett, is both gorgeous and truly disturbing).

First half of this omnibus contains some of the best Hulk storylines: part horror, part philosophical meditation, part smash everything in sight. My issue with this collection by itself, rather than the series, was that they forgot, or way more likely, omitted an eight or ten page story drawn by Kevin Nowlan. Job asks his creator w the f is up with all this suffering, and his creator responds, essentially, which of us made the universe, buddy? Plus, like a lot of omnibuses of Marvel comics, there is a severe case of in media res with characters and what happened to them before the series began. It’s a restaging of one of my absolute favourite bits of the Bible, the famous exchange between Job and the raging storm that is Yahweh. It’s goofy edgelord grimdark stuff, but that’s more interesting than the usual takes on the character.
