The artwork is enticing and rich, and readers will be happy to pore over the pages studying details like Grandad's friendly dog and the textured backgrounds as they read and reread the story. This poignant tale acknowledges the sadness of losing a loved one, but also celebrates the pleasure of remembering those who have touched our lives. Harry Woodgate (they/them) is a multi-award-winning author and illustrator, whose debut picture book Grandad’s Camper won the British Book Awards Nibbie for Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize, and named as an ALA Stonewall Honor Book. At the other end of the book the van rests under a heavy terracotta sunset, the journey ended, or at least paused. Celebrate love in all its forms, as Grandad tells his granddaughter about the adventures he used to have with Gramps.

The little girl has an idea and together they tend to the camper van and take it to the beach, just like Gramps would have wanted. Readers are introduced to a young, brown-skinned, curly-haired protagonist on a visit to their White grandfather's cottage. But what our protagonist/narrator most likes to do is to snuggle up with her Grandad and listen to stories if his adventures with Gramps. It's so important that little ones grow up and see their type of family set-up reflected in the books you share with them. Harry Woodgate (they/them) is a multi-award-winning author and illustrator, whose debut picture book Grandad’s Camper won the British Book Awards Nibbie for Children's Illustrated Book of the Year and the Waterstones Children’s Book Prize, was shortlisted for the Polari Prize , and named as an ALA Stonewall Honor Book . So, their amazing granddaughter comes up with a clever plan to fix up the old camper and get Grandad excited to explore again. Her favourite pastime, however, is to snuggle up with Grandad while he shares tales of his past adventures with Gramps. Spelling Seeds have been designed to complement Writing Roots by providing weekly, contextualised sequences of sessions for the teaching of spelling that include open-ended investigations and opportunities to practise and apply within meaningful and purposeful contexts, linked (where relevant) to other areas of the curriculum and a suggestion of how to extend the investigation into home learning.

Delightfully colourful and carrying a warm, positive message of inclusion and love, Woodgate's uplifting picture book depicts a grandad recapturing the adventures of his youth courtesy of his granddaughter. The little girl can see how much her Grandad loved travelling and how much he loved Gramps, and asks him why he doesn't travel any more, but Grandad just can't see the point without Gramps. I love that Grandad wears a t-shirt reclaiming the pink triangle in the 1970s, and I love that children will see the story of gay grandads and know families come in all different shapes and sizes. Children create labels for the items, then explore the concept of memories by thinking about how things special to them hold memories and form connections to times and events in our lives. Grandad has the kind of garden I dream of, growing fruit and vegetables, including delicious cherries, and the pair play hide-and-seek together there. When Grandad reflects back on his life with Gramps, his memories take the visual form of vignettes showing the younger versions of the men--Grandad white, Gramps with the same brown skin tone as the girl--on the road, at home, or enjoying the great outdoors, but always delighted to be together. Woodgate's explosively colorful scenes center most of the book on the men, with snapshot after snapshot of their loving life together.

The depiction of a loving, same-sex relationship between Grandad and Gramps, as well as the different ethnicities of the main characters, ensure this wonderfully inclusive book reflects a range of experiences, representative of today’s society. A touching tale about a girl’s relationship with her grandfather, which also evokes the wildness and beauty of the coast. VERDICT For the hope for new adventures, and the glimpse of intergenerational kindness and understanding, this lovely book should be on every shelf.

They will then send a postcard home from Grandad and Gramps on their beach adventure before planning, drafting and editing a sequel for the book where Grandad and the little girl head off on their own campervan adventure. Every summer, the narrator of this heart-warming tale goes to stay with her grandad in his pretty old cottage by the sea. The illustrations are full of warmth, colour and joy, beautifully echoing the excitement of discovery and adventure. While there, the protagonist, who narrates, and their grandfather play the usual games and do the usual activities, but Grandad also tells stories about how he and Gramps, a man of color who is now deceased, met and fell in love while traveling in an old VW microbus.

It’s refreshing to see diversity and inclusion without it being the main reference of the story - as it should be! Waterstones Children’s Book Award Winner and British Book Awards Nibbies Children’s Illustrated Book of the Year 2023! Grandad, white, and now balding, recounts their adventures to his young grandchild who hangs on every word. This is a quiet story that speaks volumes, and astute educators and storytellers will be able to use the book in both intimate storytimes and with larger groups. It was inspired by their university dissertation, which revealed a lack of representation for older LGBTQIA+ characters in children’s books.
