About this deal

Lift the flaps and join in the fun with Cat's Cookbook, a new story in the bestselling Tales from Acorn Wood preschool series by Julia Donaldson and Axel Scheffler, creators of The Gruffalo. I studied Drama and French at Bristol University, where I met Malcolm, a guitar-playing medic to whom I’m now married. I brought the whole collection of the books but I think this one is my favourite- the only downside is they’re annoyingly catchy and memorable so I end up wandering round saying the words which really just sums up maternity leave life lol!

With sturdy flaps on every spread and rhyming stories that are a joy to read aloud, Cat’s Cookbook joins the bestselling Tales from Acorn Wood which have been delighting parents and children for over twenty years. Further books illustrated by Axel include Room on the Broom, Stick Man, Zog and The Smeds and the Smoos – all of which have been made into much-loved animated films by Magic Light Pictures. More lift-the-flap adventures from Acorn Wood: Squirrel's Snowman, Mole's Spectacles and Badger's Band . I really enjoy getting the children in the audience to help me act out the stories and sing the songs. He is in P1 now and still reaches for these books for a bedtime story, he has almost memoried the words. Many story books are a bit more advanced for this age group and many books designed for this age group seem to be centred around non-fiction (in our experience), so we really have enjoyed collecting them all - I will always treasure them as the first stories and series my daughter has been interested in.

Julia Donaldson is author of many of today’s best-loved picture books including The Gruffalo and Stick Man. the problem is four pop ups are the same - books and the kiddo is not really interested in discovering tiny differences between them. The stories are on the simpler side (perhaps even a little boring for adults/older children) but I think this is where the books stand out for their specialism for babies and younger toddlers. My daughter has broken flaps in previous books in this series and I wonder if it’s a matter of time before she rips one of these - I’m thinking the particularly teeny and fiddly green book. This prompted me to unearth some plays I’d written for a school reading group, and since then I’ve had 20 plays published. Her other books include The Hospital Dog illustrated by Sara Ogilvie, The Christmas Pine illustrated by Victoria Sandøy and the hugely successful What the Ladybird Heard adventures illustrated by Lydia Monks.
