For instance, Will's genie has the same pointy beard he does, while Alex's has glasses and a much bushier beard. It's effective not just against the direct wishing, but also the indirect consequences, such as the afore-mentioned carasaurus failing to so much as dent the seemingly much more fragile Lampwick Bar. Within minutes, the world is turned upside down as billions of people decide to have their fantasies become reality. This consists of a rapid depletion of genies on both sides, as each attacking wish is met with a counter-wish that nullifies its effects.

Artificial Human: People created through a wish — such as a dead person brought back to life or the inhabitants of a wished-up town — are not actual people, but "remnants". Will says that he's seen enough friction happen to prepare for the worst, be it a natural disaster, military threat, or otherwise. In addition to a love of comics, the two Michigan natives bonded over their shared geography, and they began hanging out every December when they converged back in their shared home state to visit family for Christmas. Then, when Wang refuses on account of Bernie's blackmail being meaningless with society all but collapsed, Bernie tries to wish Wang dead. Production Throwback: Issue 2 reveals the US president to be none other than Jonathan Blades from Charles Soule's Letter 44. Definitely an improvement on Curse Words, but Eight Billion Genies is still just a big, goofy idea stretched out over eight issues. Robbie says that he's read enough comic books to know that wishing for immortality is a very bad idea that could go wrong any number of ways.

I actually read through issue 4, but I don’t want to count each book separately- I wish they were collected in a volume already.Body Horror: When a woman makes a wish to "be one with the sea", she is turned into a gigantic squid/whale/fish/mermaid creature as a result. As a result, they refuse to grant wishes that would cancel out too many other people's (a zombie apocalypse, world peace, any one country taking over the whole world), and break out in applause when they get to grant a completely selfless wish. Eight seconds after magical genies grant every person on earth one wish, the world is transformed forever and that’s just the beginning!

They're also shown to be Polyglots able to speak every known Earth language, addressing their chosen person in the language they're most comfortable with, be it English, French, Spanish, or Mandarin Chinese. His genie designs in particular are great and provide a great "comic foil" to the more realistic elements. Brought to You by the Letter "S": Robbie's superhero costume features a "R" insignia on the Utility Belt and the clasps for his Badass Cape.

The core group of characters were really fun to follow as we get to know them more, and learning their desires and wishes lead to some great character development. Most purchases from business sellers are protected by the Consumer Contract Regulations 2013 which give you the right to cancel the purchase within 14 days after the day you receive the item. Eight Billion Genies certainly has the look of a book that is different, but definitely a lot of fun. Recently tapped as a creative consultant for Lucasfilm, Soule has also authored several Star Wars novels. It grabbed me so well at the start and held the grip for the first three-quarters, maybe even a little more, and only slipped towards the end.

See, it has this gimmick where each issue switches to a bigger time unit: minutes, hours, days, weeks. The only survivors are people who were in reinforced bunkers or those living in wish-proofed enclaves. We’ll get updates of the world at large I’m sure, but the more intimate story always works better, rather like M. I commend the creative duo for taking this over the course it did, just when I thought it would be stuck, it pressed on.

Eight Billion Genies collects issues 1-8 of the Image Comics series written by Charles Soule and art by Ryan Browne. The Remnants of Ernest Hemingway, Dorothy Parker, and Jim Morrison all go poof during issues 2 and 3, with Ed and Robbie worrying that this could happen to June if Ed were to die. That said, this book is a fantastic ‘what-if’ story, a great light afternoon read, and a fantastic example of how to do a short and fun self-contained story well.
