Our Navy Strength edition of our award-winning Spiced Gin was inspired by the illustrious Royal Navy career of our ancestor Sir Rosslyn Wemyss, who commanded ships around the world and rose to the rank of Admiral of the Fleet. Post distillation, this ‘hearts cut’ (around 76% abv neat Gin) is cut with de-mineralized Cornish spring water to bring it down to the desired 57% abv. Citrus was a natural partner for me; I love the freshness of all citruses, so orange and lemon were definite.

Even after the invention of the Sikes hydrometer the navy still bought spirits at 57% abv out of tradition. Add ice to a mixing vessel (or large glass) then pour all of the ingredients, stirring all together for at least 60 seconds. The sweet orange peel adds a burst of bright, refreshing notes that dance on the palate, while the liquorice root lends a subtle sweetness. The Nose: the additional strength of this gin is instantly apparent, but is well-tempered with a big burst of Juniper. During his time at sea, ships’ officers still enjoyed a daily ration of gin which had to pass a gunpowder test to prove it was over 57% alcohol and therefore Navy Strength.

The Finish: A long and flavoursome finish with the botanicals in harmony for a final encore, and a dash of white pepper, before the final flourish of Juniper.
