It is a very good book to encourage children into reading alone as it is not one long story but more like short stories that flow into each other. Some stories have scary elements but they are also full of humour, in one the Wolf tries out various disguises and my daughter laughs atthe story where the Wolfis‘invisible’! I like the meta-ness of some of the stories, where Polly and the wolf discuss pros and cons of the Little Red Riding Hood story, or the stability of brick houses based on the Three Little Pigs. You will find many creative activities based on each book to make reading even more enjoyable and interactive.

This can be used to question children about their understanding of previous stories that they have read. Despite many hairy encounters with the hungry wolf, there are no quivering females here and granny, too, is made of sterner stuff than might be expected. There were three sequels in the same format: Polly and the Wolf Again, Tales of Polly and the Hungry Wolf and Last Stories of Polly and the Wolf.My favourite is “Monday’s Child”, in which Polly and the (not so stupid) wolf have a “literary discussion”: the wolf proves himself to be rather good at talking about poems, scoffing at the kind that merely rhymes and telling Polly that proper poetry should “make you feel you understand life for the first time”, before going on to recite a poem about cooking and eating children. On the one hand the wold plays a victim role constantly in Polly's life, on the other hand he is still a predator and she can't afford to let her guard down for a minute. This literary theme is carried on through the book, which references many favourite children’s stories, including Little Red Riding Hood, The Three Little Pigs and The Wolf and the Seven Little Kids, but it also has overtones of Scheherazade from One Thousand and One Nights, with Polly managing to deflect the wolf’s violence towards her over and over again, albeit with chocolate cake and daisies rather than cliff-hanger stories. This story also has a character I particularly approve of: a grandmother, portrayed as quick-witted and able to see off danger.

Clever Polly And the Stupid Wolf (A Puffin Book) : Storr

At nine years old I had moved into a slightly bigger room, and this smaller one had become a junk room, or book room, or study, depending how kind you want to be. It doesn't bring tears to your eyes and make you feel you understand life for the first time, like proper poetry. There is the complexity of power and empowerment where Polly feels reliant enough upon her own wits to feed and rescue the wolf (but never speak kindly to him).Clever Polly isn't frightened at all and has a plan that's bound to outwit the big, bad but very stupid wolf. The wolf tries hard to capture Polly and eat her but Polly is a quick thinking smart child who always gets away. The book is hilarious, witty and joyful, turning many of the usual fairytales upside down and offering a very different slant for which I am very grateful. It was made into the TV series Escape Into Night and the film Paperhouse; Storr was not fond of the latter, and particularly disliked the ending.

A few weeks ago I was helping my mother clear out the room I had as a small child, sifting through moth-eaten teddy bears, boxes of broken crayons and hundreds of children’s books.
