Talon 22 features an adjustable back length, ensuring the pack fits well to your body and enabling the most comfortable carrying experience. For rock climbing, the lack of any way to carry a rope on the outside is a big disadvantage, while with only one axe loop and short side compression straps your winter gear options are similarly limited. The Talon 22 uses a flexible frame-sheet to provide support and to transfer weight to your hips whilst maintaining flexibility and freedom of movement. For me this feature is redundant, though plenty of cycling hillwalkers and climbers will no doubt beg to differ.

The shoulder straps are not as dense as Arc’teryx Brize 25, but it’s enough given its 22-liter capacity and the balance the entire suspension system provides. This pack has been put through rigorous testing in various conditions and has proven useful in almost any situation. In clement summer conditions I've found it easily big enough, but it is certainly more of a stretch with the added gear required in winter.

The Talon and Tempest are made in two sizes (unlike the Stratos), and it’s easy to dial in the fit with the adjustable shoulder straps.

Your torso length can be found by measuring from your C7 vertebra (the bony protrusion at the back of your neck when looking down) to the height of your iliac crest (top of your hip bones, where you put your hands on your hips). Running on varied and challenging trails is a welcome break from the monotony of pounding pavement (or even worse, the belt of a treadmill). You can dial in the fit even more by moving the shoulder straps up and down via Velcro attachments near the top, as well as by tightening the load-lifter straps.All the zippers glide like butter and are coupled with large pull tabs, making it easier to open/close the compartments. The Talon 22's durability is also impressive, and even after years of testing, it has yet to show much wear. The overall best-value pack we tested is the REI Co-op Flash 22, and costs less than half as much as the Talon 22.
