About this deal

This book being an autobiography I wanted to know something of the man and how he got to be a comedian. Then, as he's actually in a phone booth at the end of the street, he rushes down and knocks on his mother's door (then goes in for his dinner). In many ways he's an old fashioned kind of comedian and the scope and enormity of his fanbase reflects this.

Peter Kay's best selling autobiography captures his early years from school through to college and part-time working. I would thoroughly recommend the Audible version of The Sound of Laughter if like me you didn’t read the book or if even if you did, either way it’ll brighten up your day and put a smile on your face. If you know who this is, I’d recommend the audiobook where he spends 1/3rd the time ‘off-script’ and talking about whatever he feels like. He said things got so bad at one point he actually resorted to drinking the windscreen wash from his car’s wipers: ‘Maggie [Philbin, his wife at the time] got suspicious when I insisted on cleaning the car five times a day. Three months later in April Peter made his first public appearance since announcing his break from the industry.

Glad I did, as this was the part where he tells his little anecdotes about the various jobs he’s had. Whilst working on BBC Series The Sunday Show, Kay decided to “push the boat out” on his last episode of Peter Kay’s World Of Entertainment segment and get Jimmy Savile on.

Peter Kay published this autobiography in 2006 and it was apparently the UK's best selling hardback in this genre. By the end of his run, Peter will have broken the record for the most shows played at the O2 arena by an artist, with an impressive 44 shows at the venue to his name, surpassing previous record-holders Take That who have performed 34 shows. Fifty-year-old Peter’s new book collects his childhood TV memories and documents his own journey to realising his small screen dreams — from making tea at Granada Studios to creating some of our best-loved comedy programmes, including Phoenix Nights and Car Share. So it should come as no surprise that Peter Kay has plenty of stories, anecdotes and laughs along the way in his career. Peter Kay has revealed he is writing a third autobiography and was inspired by recording his first one for an audiobook. And, ‘How have Yorkshire managed to wangle a new series of The Incredible Hulk two weeks before any bugger else? I'm getting more and more into autobiographies as time goes on, and it's reassuring to know that a lot of famous people were precisely nowhere when all of a sudden, things started happening for them. Chock-full of TV gossip, brilliant one-liners and, of course, irresistible observational comedy, it's exactly the book every Peter Kay fan has been waiting for. The 50-year-old said he “immediately said yes” but “panicked when they told me who the line-up was going to be.

The North West comedian has collected his childhood memories as well as documenting his impressive journey from Phoenix Nights to Car Share. The book is so obviously Kay's creation as it has his 'voice' written all over it; his transparency, earnestly and comedy are all astounding, and to top it all off he appears to be just as good a story teller on page as he is on stage! As a memoir the plot suffers from being a report of the truth which in the case of Mr Kay seems to be surprisingly dull. Listened via the audio, some time after the initial release so it was advertised as having bonus content. The second is more touching where he reflects on the role religion has played in his life, and was a unexpected moment of unapologetic sincerity.
