Night Train to Marrakech - Dinah Jefferies, Author

The third in the Daughters of War trilogy, this gripping, page-turning and dramatic novel brings the colour, atmosphere and sun-baked walls of 1960s Marrakech vividly to life – and the wild arid desert and mountains that surround it. The train that runs from Marrakech to Fes is the Al Atlas Train, which is one of two trains that run in Morocco. However the main storyline, based around the life of Clemence and the political situation in Morocco, was excellent. This is very much Vicky’s story and Clemence’s, and although having two completely new characters to get to know so late in the trilogy unsettled me slightly, I did warm to them later in the book. This was a gripping read with some wonderful characters set against a beautiful backdrop of 1960s Morocco where political tensions were running high. This is the third book in Dinah Jeffries "Daughters of War" series, I must admit that I haven't read the other two but this can be read completely as a standalone and I will now go back and read the previous two. The backdrop to the story involves a great deal of political upheaval and when Vicky and Bea witness the murder of a new friend they find themselves in the crosshairs of some very evil people. I enjoyed the relationship which developed between her and Vicky and how this, although it exposed them both (and others) to danger, ultimately allowed for past losses to be properly mourned, and for interfamilial rifts to be healed. The girls were hoping to enjoy the delights of Marrakech, the food, the weather, the local social life and maybe even new love interests.

Night Train to Marrakech (The Daughters of War, Book 3)

Great sensory details that made me feel as if I was there - certainly helped by the recent oppressive heat I read it in. It’s very visual and the descriptions are so vivid, I almost felt as if I was there on the streets and in the souks of Marrakech. Jaques, her late fathers own father had only mentioned her recently and Vicky is keen to find out more about her father whom she never met and thinks Clémence might help. She took her cousin Bea along with her for company and so that she had somebody young to enjoy the country with.Plus, you’ll have a slightly reclining seat, extra legroom (when compared to second-class), and power outlets. The newer style has open carriages with seats arranged on either side of a central aisle, while older trains have separate compartments with two rows of seats facing each other. Vicky, the daughter of Elise and Victor travels to Morocco in the hope to meet her grandmother Clemence and learn more about her past.
