It’s ok to play the notes more slowly than instructed when sight reading, especially in the beginning. These are super-important, and if you follow them to the letter your sight reading will improve quicker than you might expect. Being able to play rhythms accurately with a metronome is essential if you are going to become a competent sight reader. There, they will have all the music you will ever be able to read in your lifetime, and you’ll be able to check out as much as you’d like.
