About this deal

The original SAS Rogue Hero blew up planes, parachuted without a helmet and found Colditz 'marvellous'. He was the son of Brigadier-General Archibald Stirling, of Keir, and Margaret Fraser, daughter of Simon Fraser, the Lord Lovat (a descendant of Charles II). The history of the British Army's Special Air Service (SAS) regiment of the British Army begins with its formation during the Western Desert Campaign of the Second World War, and continues to the present day. One of their first acts was to strap parachutes to their backs and jump out of a plane, despite neither of them having had any training.

Operation Flavius in March 1988 was a SAS operation in Gibraltar in which three PIRA volunteers, Seán Savage, Daniel McCann and Mairéad Farrell, were killed. Paddy’, as the Irishman was known, was the man Stirling wanted to be; the gifted sportsman and superb guerrilla soldier, festooned in medals, respected by his men and admired by his peers. Near the end of the year, men from 2nd SAS were parachuted into Italy to work with the Italian resistance in Operation Tombola, where they remained until Italy was liberated.Spotted by guards, Stirling abandoned his crutches and entered the building, only to come face-to-face with an officer with whom he had previously fallen out.

They were renamed 1st SAS Regiment and consisted of four British squadrons, one Free French Squadron, one Greek Squadron, and the Special Boat Section (SBS). He spent the rest of the war as a prisoner of war, escaping numerous times before being moved to the supposedly 'escape proof' Colditz Castle. Lindsay Salt, Director of BBC Drama says: “Series one dazzled millions of viewers across the country with its swagger, action-packed set pieces and wit, winning a whole legion of fans in the process. In 2002 the SAS memorial, a statue of Stirling standing on a rock, was unveiled on the Hill of Row near his family's estate at Park of Keir. Woodhouse's first assignment was to go to Yemen to report on the state of the royalist forces when a cease-fire was declared. You have to hand it to the Scottish government: the deletion of WhatsApp messages is good preemptive news management, whether accidental, by default or deliberate. He had only recently left his commando troop after an altercation with his commanding-officer, Major Geoffrey Keyes. The series will be executive produced by Karen Wilson, Emma Kingsman-Lloyd and Martin Haines for Kudos, and Nick Lambon for the BBC.

Due to Axis resistance and adverse weather conditions, the mission was a disaster with 22 men killed or captured (one-third of the men). Stirling lasted a week in his post before he relinquished his command; no reason for his abrupt departure was noted on his service record. He made four further escape attempts, before he was sent to Colditz Castle, where he remained as a prisoner for the rest of the war.

For larger pre-planned operations, Ulster Troop was reinforced by SAS personnel, often in small 2- or 3-man teams from the Special Projects Team. As quickly as possible he organised raids on ports using this simple method, bluffing through checkpoints at night using the language skills of some of his soldiers.

His biographer Alan Hoe disputed the newspaper's disparaging portrayal of Stirling as a right-wing ' Colonel Blimp'. Believing that taking his idea up the chain of command was unlikely to work, Stirling decided to go straight to the top. In the summer of 1941, Bill was in Cairo working as an adviser for the Chief of the General Staff, Lt General Arthur Smith. The plan was that in the event of civil unrest resulting in the breakdown of normal Government operations, they would take over its running. In April 1943, the 1st SAS was reorganised into the Special Raiding Squadron under the command of Mayne and the Special Boat Squadron under the command of George Jellicoe. It was while recuperating in a Cairo hospital that Bill and David drafted a document for the small guerrilla force that would become known as the SAS. Some of the new series recruits also include Mark Rowley (The Last Kingdom, The North Water) and Jack Barton (Heartstopper, War of the Worlds), who will play SAS members Jock McDiarmid and John Tonkin respectively. SAS Rogue Heroeswill air on BBC One and iPlayer in the UK, MGM+ in the United States and is distributed internationally by Banijay Rights.
