About this deal

The EPG is also superb, using an instantly accessible grid layout and excellent use of the remote keys to skip forward in time or switch to a List view. When you set something to record, it asks if you want to record the whole series or the single event, and if a programme is being simulcast in HD it asks which version you want to record. Finding recordings is easy thanks to the Media List’s terrific layout – it’s broken down into video, radio, music and photo and from here you can setup playlists or copy content to a USB device. A service management system to display status of custom applications, start or stop them, and disable/enable boot-time autostart. With a 320GB hard drive, the Humax FOXSAT-HDR is capable of recording about 200 hours of standard definition programmes, or around 80 hours in high definition (HD). The receiver can collect the whole Freesat 7 day electronic programme guide (EPG) in around 30 seconds.

The quality of standard-definition pictures on this box compares very well with those of Sky and Freeview, but as with any digital TV platform the quality varies wildly depending on the broadcast quality – ITV channels, for example, look awful but the BBC’s roster looks a lot sharper and cleaner. The Humax Foxsat HDR has won numerous award since its release in November 2008. The Humax Foxsat HDR has won the 2008 Freesat Awards and has recently been awarded "Home Gadget of the Year" by T3.

On the plus side, I have the ability to properly troubleshoot future failures so not a bad outcome, as long as the existence of two working boxes is not immediately apparent to the other half that might perceive this to be "clutter" or "unnecessary."

Instructions say press standby and other users say you need to press standby for around 30 secs. I've not updated mine for a while and I've always powered off and it's always worked for me. Please can you tell me what I need to do for Foxsat to give me the relevant DLNA link for streaming?

Standard definition contents we had no qualms about either, comparable in quality to most Freeview services. The box does come with the “upscaling” promise, but what this really means is that you don’t lose any quality because you can use the HDMI. As with Freeview, quality also differs between providers with the quality seeming to deteriorate as you setup through numbers. BBC is generally very good, ITV seems to get progressively worse as you move up through ITV2+1 and so on. But the SD channel quality is nothing to complain about, until it's contrasted with the great HD content, which will simply leave you wanting more. Thanks Graham I can finally see them after reinstalling Twonky4 media server under root video folders but now I have more questions than before We were excited by the inclusion of BBC HD in the line-up of channels, as this was the first time free-to-air HD programming had been made available in the UK. For further opinions on the Freesat service, see our Humax Foxsat-HD review (What’s New, Shopper 247). On the other hand, if all the capacitors have perfectly flat tops, it's questionable whether you really have a PSU problem and I do not recommend just replacing the caps without further investigation. As there is a reasonable chance your unit is unrepairable, you have little to lose by sourcing a total replacement second hand, and then using that as an aid to diagnosis (swap PSUs). If the fault moves with the PSU you do indeed have a PSU fault and it may be possible to do something about it. If the fault remains with the motherboard, you have a scrap unit available for parts. Please note that if the normal loader software is not equipped, the product may not be updated or operate properly after software update.
