About this deal

A dazzling feat of imagination. I loved every breathless moment of it!’ – Cat Doyle, author of The Storm Keeper’s Island and co-author of Twin Crowns Yet how is that meant to happen when a bard sings a true song that spells doom and destruction for the Eyrie and everyone on the island – oh it just so happens to implicate Skandar. That’s the last thing he needs, it’s not like everything doesn’t hate him enough or isn't scared of him now is allowed to openly train using his chosen elemental power. Do you think it’s fair that most of the kids don’t trust Skandar because he’s a spirit wielder? Why is it that Skandar’s friends do trust him? What do you think of the Peregrine Society members, and how do you think they feel about Skandar? Using textual evidence from the novel, describe why you think Skandar is or isn’t a trustworthy character. Who does Skandar trust? Now that they are in their second year at the Eyrie, Skandar and his friends get to visit some of the elemental zones on the Island. Which zone do you think would be most interesting to visit? What do you think of the Island setting? What aspects of the Island make it feel like a real place, and what makes it feel more magical or legendary?

Steadman has a vast imagination, her world-building is a joy, the battle scenes are thrilling and her characters charm.' – The Times Children's Book of the Week There was nothing. Every child who turned thirteen before the summer solstice was required to take the Hatchery exam. It was in the Treaty. It was the law. Though, apparently, that hadn’t applied to Skandar. Kenna was ashamed of the unkind thoughts that filled her head. How she had always been stronger, faster, cleverer. She’d helped raise Skandar; she would have known if he was exceptional. And—although she loved him very much—he wasn’t. He’d always needed her. And that had to mean Skandar was hiding something. Despite making friends and belonging to the Grins, Skandar spends much of the book feeling like an outsider. Why does he feel this way? How do different characters reach out or support Skandar throughout the book? Skandar loves the World of unicorns and was devastated on the day when he wasn’t allowed to take the hatchery test. He considers the Island his home and went further than almost anyone to protect it when the Island was imploding on itself due to the actions of Dorian Manning. He always liked discovering her things about the Island such as Four Point, or the Eyrie upon first entering.

Need Help?

In book 2, Skandar and the Phantom Rider, Skandar if finally a real unicorn rider. But things don't stay that simple for long. Immortal wild unicorns are being killed and a prophecy warns of terrible danger. And the cherry on top is that Skandar's sister, Kenna, wants to join him on his potentially deadly mission. Skandar has a bit of a competitive personality when on the Island as he frequently races with Bobby in their flight races and to a lesser extent Amber Fairfax. He gets on best with Flo, as she acts almost as a big sister to him when he’s worried, with the same being true in reverse. Skandar was initially reluctant to trust Mitchell due to his predjudice against Spirit Wielders but the two get on much better late in their first and into their second years. Kenna’s desire for a unicorn of her own makes her envious of Skandar. Have you ever felt envious of a sibling or a friend? In addition to being envious, Kenna is angry at her brother and feels she can’t trust him. Why does she feel this way? What does Kenna and Skandar’s relationship have in common with that of siblings Agatha and Erika Everhart? Steadman was educated at The King's School, Canterbury, attending on music and academic scholarships followed by languages and law at Selwyn College, Cambridge, and a master's degree in creative writing at Cambridge. [1] Flo’s mother, Sara, encourages the kids not to give into the bullies and says, “So the people with the power don’t like spirit wielders. What if they decide they don’t like healers next? Or saddlers? Or riders with flaming hair? Nothing gives the Silver Circle the right to abuse their power.” (p. 100) Write an opinion essay about why we should stand up to bullies who are trying to abuse their power. Never have unicorns been so ferocious, fearsome and thrilling! A fantastically gripping read!’ – Laura Ellen Anderson, author of Amelia Fang and Rainbow GreyRoberta is Skandar's best friend, teammate and possibly love interest. They first met at the Hatchery door. The next morning, Skandar went to the Trough, where rider's ate all their meals, he saw Gabriel's mutation, which Skandar thought made him look like a Greek statue, he overheard people gossiping about Joby Worsham, the instructor of Mainlander classes for people like Skandar. People were saying that was barely human, like a ghost, Flo told him that people only gossiped about Worsham because his unicorn was dead. The Mainlander Hatchlings went up to Instructor Worsham's treehouse, some of them quite scared. He seemed not as scary as the Hatchlings thought he even let them call him by his first name. He told them the story of how his unicorn, Winter's Phantom, was killed and Skandar couldn't help but feel bad for him. Skandar returned to the treehouse to find Mitchell playing with his Chaos Cards, he opened up about how the reason he didn't like Skandar was because of his father and their family name.
