It is 1814, and the defeat of Napoleon seems imminent — if the well protected city of Toulouse can be conquered. For Richard Sharpe, the battle turns out to be one of the bloodiest of the Peninsular War, and he must draw on his last reserves of strength to lead his troops to victory. Discrepancies including Sharpe being a Major one minute and a Captain the next, but he's not made a major until later that year. Harper referred to as a RSM when he still should be a Sergeant.
Points are laboured or explained repeatedly within a few sentences of each other....yes....we get it! In 1809, Napoleon’s army sweeps across Spain. Lieutenant Richard Sharpe is newly in command of the demoralized, distrustful men of the 95th Rifles. He must lead them to safety, possible only through the enemy-infested mountains of Spain. This book takes place between the end of the Peninsular War and the Waterloo Campaign. Before Sharpe pursues Ducos to Italy, he fights in the climatic battle at Toulouse. But when Napoleon is exiled to Elba and his person’s treasury lost, Sharpe suspects Ducos’s involvement and the hunt begins.
I began writing Sharpe in 1980 and he’s still going strong. I never thought there would be this many books – I imagined there might be ten or eleven – but then along came Sean Bean and the television programmes and I virtually began a whole new Sharpe series. Initially, Paul McGann was cast in the title role; however, two weeks into filming of the first episode in Ukraine, McGann injured his knee playing football and was forced to withdraw. [7] [1] When production started again a month later, Sean Bean was given the role because he was the only suitable replacement available at short notice. The first actor cast was Daragh O'Malley as Harper. The character of Rifleman Harris, played by Jason Salkey, did not exist in the books and was created for the television series. The producers wanted a "clever one" and took inspiration from a real soldier who was illiterate but had dictated his own recollections of the war, which were published. [8] The greatest threat to Wellington’s Salamanca Campaign is not Napoleon’s Army but France’s deadliest assassin. He’s already failed to kill Captain Richard Sharpe once.Now, he’s getting a second chance. Characters accents seem to change wildly with Tom Garrod changing from Scottish to Londoner within 2 chapters. Major Hogan's accent seems to change 2-3x through the narration.
Sean Bean played the role of Richard Sharpe in the TV adaptation Sharpe from 1993 to 1997. He then returned for two reprisals in 2006 and 2008. Almost every episode is a direction adaptation, albeit with obvious differences, of a Cornwell novel.
However, I have found this book plagued with continuity errors that could have been easily avoided. I enjoyed this but it has many discrepancies & the narrator has not been up to his best, his accents for a number of characters changed or not as good, particularly Harper and Hogan.
