Dark Rooms by Lynda La Plante | Goodreads

I always devour books by Lynda La Plante and 'Dark Rooms' was no exception. As well as the core investigation per novel, this series is as much about Jane's life and career. Lynda has teased both ninth and tenth books, which may bring the series full circle as we approach 'Prime Suspect'. I love this series and always enjoy the evolution of Jane's character - it was very exciting to see her once again take a step forward in career with her promotion. I cannot wait to see what is next in store for DI Tennison. Lynda is an honorary fellow of the British Film Institute and was awarded theBAFTADennis Potter Best Writer's Award in 2000. In 2008, she was awarded aCBEin the Queen's Birthday Honours List for services to Literature, Drama and Charity. Lynda La Plante (born Lynda Titchmarsh) is a British author, screenwriter, and erstwhile actress (her performances in Rentaghost and other programmes were under her stage name of Lynda Marchal), best known for writing the Prime Suspect television crime series. Jane Tennison herself was an extremely unlikable character and i often found myself frustrated with how she treated practically everyone around her. Buying this book, it was clear it was part of a series starring a detective, but in theory it was a standalone book. In that, I can say it was.Jane herself comes off as quite dislikable, the whole storyline of her doing a big renovation of her house suddenly out of nowhere became quite boring - the trip to Australia was quite simply ludicrous and on the whole, the whole story was meh. I have on my audio books 174 titles, and I wish I could say they were all hers, but sadly not all available. Could you please endeavour to put all her books on audio…I have just finished the govener book 1, and I can’t find book 2. .. During reading I did some googling as I was trying to understand the period it was set, and found this was a tv series starring Helen Mirren years ago! I hope it was better than this book and that played the Jane character in a better way than she was portrayed here. I have to say that I’ve become totally addicted to Lynda La Plante’s novels. As a retired police officer myself, I can say that she explores and provides in-depth knowledge of police and forensic procedure to a really high level, and that alone is very impressive considering she was never actually a serving police office herself. Her research is obviously incredibly thorough. I always wait with bated breath, her new novels. Well done, Lynda! You’re certainly one of the finest!!! Reply

Dark Rooms (Tennison, book 8) by Lynda La Plante

I think Lynda la Plante is much better on tv than in print! What a poorly written book; I’ve never thought the word bland would describe a novel but somehow it does for this effort. The brief storyline with the weed was so so so unneeded and began with ooh whats Eddie hiding and ended abruptly a chapter later, why? Laced with gothic undertones in the centrepiece of the decaying Victorian mansion and the horrors hiding within, once home to an eccentric family with a long history of tragedy, this is a tightly plotted police procedural featuring realistic forensic science of the time period, and even a touch of romance for Jane, as well as trips to the coast and as far as Australia, exploring some dark and disturbing themes and complex characters through every navigation of the twisting plot. Throughout the series, discrimination - and specifically misogyny - within the police has been a running theme, once more explored in this novel alongside other abuses of power and the elusiveness of long-buried secrets. Just love your books, Lynda. Just finished unholy murder and am just about to start Judas Horse. You are a truly amazing writer in the thriller genre. Reply This Morning viewers were left divided by the talent on the show earlier this morning, despite it impressing presenters. Rochelle Humes and Andi Peters returned to the ITV programme today [August 17] to speak with best-selling author Lynda La Plante about her brand new book, Dark Rooms .

Jane Tennison is leading a murder investigation into the recent brutal death of a young girl, her decomposed starved body discovered in an old air raid shelter in the garden of the Lanark’s now derelict house. Initially the focus is on identifying the victim, until another body is found, hidden in the walls of the shelter. What was the point of the investigation? The family history was so all over the place and by the end of the book the whole thing seemed like a waste of time. We have a swap letterbox library locally as the public library has been closed due to Covid. I borrowed one of your books Lynda called Blind Fury is was great having never read your books before I am hooked, just finished reading Unholy Murder that was fantastic. My next is Blunt Force keep up the great writing. Reply Overall, Dark Rooms was a weaker Tennison novel from Lynda La Plante, and one that does not really stand out when compared to some of the more impressive books in the series. While I am little critical of it, Dark Rooms did have its interesting and powerful moments, and is still worth a read, especially for established fans of the series. I am hoping that the next book in the series, Taste of Blood, has a better story behind it, and I am still intrigued to see how this series continues.

But not everyone was so impressed - one viewer said: "First a screaming child, now a howling opera singing dog. Scrabbling for content This Morning?" Dark Rooms' is the eighth book in the Jane Tennison series, prequel to the 'Prime Suspect' TV series (and the novelisations of the first three seasons). Lynda La Plante presents an intricate case for the recently promoted Jane Tennison, her first investigation as a Detective Inspector following her required time spent in uniform. It is now the mid-80s, and we Then the large dog howls along to the tune for a few seconds, letting out one big bellow to finish it off. I have nearly all Lynda’s books they just get better and better the dark room is one of the best Reply Both sets of parents were awful, Eddies less so, and Jane’s sister didn’t seem to be anyone you’d want to grab a drink with either. All the misogynistic horrors, sexual harassment in the workplace and tropes of the 1970s are there amid a rather bizarre plot of not just dark rooms but dark "family secrets" and dark discoveries. If I was to be completely objective, I would say that this was deeply flawed. What new DI shares details of a delicate case with family and friends? However I wallowed in the retro on every level and enjoyed my wallow as much as Jane Tennison enjoys a bath. Then Jane’s partner Eddie was weird. I had no idea what he actually looked like as it was never said so I had to make something up in my head - felt very strange - and he just didn’t seem like a good bloke for someone who’s a good detective - I mean, read the red flags! Lynda's original script for the much-acclaimed Prime Suspectwon awards fromBAFTA,Emmys, British Broadcasting and Royal Television Society as well as the 1993 Edgar Allan Poe Award. I love mysteries, crime novels, and stories of this sort, but this was really a disappointing read. Where have I been ? I’ve always enjoyed reading but only lately started reading your books now I’m so hooked. I’m working on completing my collection. Thank you Reply
