About this deal

Thank you NetGalley, Harper 360, HQ Digital and Katy Brent for letting me read “How to Kill Men and Get Away With It” in exchange for an honest review. I'd recommend this book to people who enjoyed the show Dexter and looking for a woman's take on it. HOW TO KILL MEN AND GET AWAY WITH IT is an aggressively decent read, but it's heavy on the gore and I don't really think the cover prepares you for that. There's a lot of rather graphic torture and murder scenes, including some of animals. The tonal shifts were rather jarring, although I do think this would translate well to the screen. I kept envisioning it as one of those quirky streaming murder shows, like My Life Is Murder or Ms. Fisher's Modern Murder Mysteries. I think it would translate well to screen. It was just a little too much for me and I felt like the ending was a little silly.

Her father, Sir Peter Lange, says she is a danger to herself and has been admitted to a private mental health clinic. I have always been intrigued by the human mind and especially love psychological thrillers. Specifically, in this context, it is particularly intriguing as mental illnesses make one respond in so many different ways, affecting not only their lives but also those of people around them. When something like this is added to the storyline, we get a gripping tale, the types of which are one of my favourites.

I absolutely, massively disliked Kitty. I do realise that she was written like that on purpose, but come on, I can take it only that long…

Although the relatively small cast of secondary characters is not given much depth, they are skilfully used to drive and enrich the story's themes. i really loved how each chapter showed the name of the location they were in (ie certain restaurants or a certain hotel, etc.) Kitty forms a cute connection that allows her softer side to be shown and drives some character growth. However, despite the adorable initial banter and flirting, I was not completely sold on the romance since a lot is told and not shown.
