Contrails are made by high-flying jet airplanes. They are still clouds, though, because they are made of water droplets condensed from the water vapor in the exhaust of the jet engines. However, I have to take issue with your descriptions of crazy downhill running. I’ve recently had my first off on a bike and after the ambulance ride and concussion, I feel a lot safer haring down a precarious scree gully than cycling on the roads at this time of the year! 😉

I didn’t have any recognition of the names in the book. There wasn’t a single fell runner who I recognised, apart from perhaps Ron Hill, who wasn’t really a fell runner. This is perhaps proof of the amateur nature of the sport; a sport, which more or less has avoided the trappings of commercialism. The GOES-16 (Geostationary Operational Environmental Satellite-16) satellite can watch clouds with a new instrument called the Advanced Baseline Imager, or ABI for short. Scientists have found that rapid growth and cooling at the tops of clouds are indicators of the potential for severe weather. The ABI can show more detailed changes in cloud-top features, helping scientists assess the potential size and severity of a storm even before it reaches its peak! Altocumulus and stratocumulus are often mistaken. Besides altocumulus being higher up in the sky, another way to tell them apart is by the size of their individual cloud mounds. Place your hand up to the sky and in the direction of the cloud; if the mound is the size of your thumb, it's altocumulus. (If it's closer to fist-size, it's probably stratocumulus.) Most interesting to me, personally, as an aging would-be runner, is the sheer durability of these guys. And gals. Mr. Askwith describes the Wasdale, a race over 25 miles of rugged mountain terrain, as having sixty-eight starters with only twenty-six under forty. 5. How much does a cloud weigh?

Endurance athletes, mostly over 40, revel in using our bodies and doing more than we thought we could. Some are physically gifted. Most are not. We’re moms, teachers, sheep herders, IT guys. We’re nothing special, which makes what we do out there all the more remarkable. Cumulonimbus clouds are one of the few clouds that span the low, middle, and high layers. They resemble the cumulus clouds from which they grow, except they rise into towers with bulging upper portions that look like cauliflower. Cumulonimbus cloud tops are usually always flattened in the shape of an anvil or plume. Their bottoms are often hazy and dark. Richard Askwith introduces us to not only fell running, but also fell runners, fell races and long-distance challenges, and the remarkable story of fell-running history – all interwoven with details of the contemporary fell-running year as it passes month by month. This book was…okay. The author crammed it so full of statistics that it was like reading a dictionary at times. I wish he’d spoken about his *actual* fell running experiences like the synopsis promised… These zones are created by the interaction of large cells of air which are part of the earth's global circulation patterns. 5. Confession: I did get tired of the book, about halfway through, but that's more my own personal failing rather than a jab at the book. I'd still recommend it.

Facts and figures were lost on me, but enjoyed reading about hills and peaks I’ve walked in, and despite the authors obvious sexist attitude, I also found the chapters on his runs and musings the most interesting.
