The Special Reconnaissance Unit, also known as 14 Intelligence Company, was the successor to the Military Reaction Force (MRF). [5] Selection to 14 Intelligence Company was available to all serving members of the British armed forces and to both sexes. For the first time, women could become members of a UK Special Forces unit. Candidates were required to pass a rigorous selection process, designed to select the individuals who possessed the necessary qualities to deal with undercover covert operations they'd be tasked with. In one selection course, out of 1000 applicants who applied, only 17 were deployed to Northern Ireland. Ms Cahill said she was raped and later interrogated by the IRA about her claims. She later went to the police and a case was brought against the alleged rapist and those said to have been involved in the IRA inquiry. http://www.spinwatch.org/index.php/issues/northern-ireland/item/5583-the-long-shadow-of-the-military-reaction-force Cahill’s role as a key British agent was known to only a small handful of individuals. But a senior IRA source revealed that there was suspicion that he was a “tout” – slang for informer. The three men were in the process of robbing the bookmakers when they were targeted by undercover British soldiers.

In the book he claims he arranged to meet a Sinn Féin member in Cork with a view to joining the IRA but later “bottled” it and failed to show up for the meeting.

To test their mental concentration, the DS often left candidates in the cold for a night or two and then gathered them in a warm lecture room to watch a boring documentary, on which they would have to answer detailed questionnaires.

Candidates showed up with just two warm-weather fatigues, a set of civvies, and PT gear. They’re allowed to keep their watches (so the DS could mess with their sense of time). The modified Q cars driven by 14 Company operators in Northern Ireland had many suprises hidden beneath their seemingly ordinary exteriors. Some of the details of the case were discussed at a recent coroner’s court hearing into the Derry killings. Lawrence McNally (38), Peter Ryan (37) and Tony Doris (21) were shot dead by the SAS in the village of Coagh in Co Tyrone in June 1991.

Selection and training of personnel from all arms of the British Armed Forces was conducted in a number of locations on the mainland. Candidates, both male and female, volunteered for special duties for periods of 18–36 months, before being returned to a parent unit. Trained surveillance operators could volunteer for re-deployment after a period with the parent unit, with potential opportunities to serve in command, staff or training roles within the organisation or higher command structure. Claims about his involvement in secret British army operations in the north emerged during his 1987 trial for smuggling 50 kilos of cannabis into Sweden. A source revealed that Cahill – who died in 2004 – was being followed by a covert unit as he drove around Belfast when the pictures were taken. Operator's cars would also be fitted with systems to detect any tampering with the vehicle's electronics - a sign that a car bomb had been planted. However, others claimed the operation was pre-planned and that the gang had been under surveillance after receiving weapons and documents stolen from a car belonging to members of the 14th Intelligence Company. Still don’t understand why we don’t use the MRAPs and Strykers as replacements. Multi wheel driv...

In 2017, the family arranged to have a 2nd independent review of the finding of the Autopsy Report and as a result new forensic evidence has been uncovered which runs contrary to the account of the killing given by the soldiers. The family is currently investigating a new inquest in light of this new evidence and will also be pursuing a civil action against the MOD for the unlawful killing of Dennis caused by the negligence and assault and battery of the soldiers."
