With the election of George W. Bush, the song’s title was irresistible, and it was soon used for blunt ends: P. Diddy, shaken out of his torpor to record a pissed-off rap, “American Dream,” for the film Training Day, sampled “This Is Not America,” with Bowie providing new vocals. The best of the latter-day covers was Charlie Haden’s, who in 2005 made “This Is Not America” a romp, a joyous collaboration that seems set out to disprove the song’s title: Haden’s version is America on one of its better, chaotic days.

Oh, I didn’t mean consciously copying Ferry. It should have been “copying”. Though I think it’s funny 2 of the better songs of Bowie’s 80’s output sound a bit like Ferry. Agree Ferry has been more solid with his solo music style. I think Bowie is more obviously dependent on inspiration from without and that’s one of the reasons the 80’s lapse happened…Ferry, I *think* is more inspired by his own fantasy world and has a specific sound he’s searching for but never going to any great extremes to achieve it. That’s the impression I get from his solo career, Roxy Music is a different story…even though after Eno left Roxy was pretty much his project as well… You’ve worked as a freelance writer for about five years, what articles/pieces of work are you most proud of during that time? We are experiencing delays with deliveries to many countries, but in most cases local services have now resumed. Alan Friedman is a journalist, bestselling author, television personality, producer and documentary-maker who has spent the past thirty years as a correspondent and commentator with the Financial Times in London, the International Herald Tribune/wInternational New York Times, the Wall Street Journal Europe and Italian television. Friedman is also a former contributing editor at Vanity Fair and the New Yorker. He is currently an opinion columnist for Italy s Corriere della Sera newspaper. He lives in Tuscany. What surprises him most is that the voice sounds so calm and natural, as if it’s been waiting for him. He stops and looks harder to see where it’s coming from. Then he sees two figures coming toward him.

It was still novel for Bowie to write a lyric for another’s music: he had hardly done so in his life (see “Pancho”, “Even a Fool Learns to Love” and “Music Is Lethal”/”Hey Ma, Get Papa”). An excellent book from a perceptive and unshowy writer... The men Puntí writes about live on the edges, but for the most part, they've put themselves there, and can't figure out how to extract themselves. They chiefly have only themselves to blame for their troubles, although most of them either don't realize it or choose not to. They're maddening characters, and Puntí regards them with sympathy, but never valorizes their usually unfortunate decisions. It's an accomplished book, filled with bone-dry humor and incisive observations about people who desperately need to connect, but have no idea how. It's also a powerful literary reminder that nostalgia and magical thinking both threaten the way we relate to one another, and to ourselves." -- NPR You made a great point. This Is Not America and even Never Let Me Down (song) are very Ferry-esque and it is indeed Bowie copying Ferry, for Ferry always had these leanings. I digressed. Didn’t know Bowie didn’t write the music but now that I know it makes a lot of sense. It doesn’t quite sound like his musical signature, does it. But at the same time it could easily pass for his composition. This was the 80’s after all, a decade in which Bowie didn’t quite sound like Bowie.

Owolade, who was born in Nigeria but raised in southeast London, mostly makes his case with clarity and care as he calls for race relations in Britain to be understood from a unique perspective. In his debut book ‘This Is Not America’, he looks at how a split away from American views on race and identity might help build an anti-racist agenda in Britain. We caught up with him to discuss the book, his freelance work and diversity within the media industry. I’m ashamed to say I never listened to the lyrics properly. Let’s face it, the key lyric everyone remembers is sha-la-la-la-laaa. 😉In one of the longest interviews he ever gave, the Friends actor confided that he was ‘a dark soul’ who dreamed of meeting the right woman and starting a family Behind the self-confident image of world’s most influential country, we now see a nation tearing itself apart. The United States may be arguably the world’s only superpower, but its internal tensions are a symptom of suffering and division, a condition only exacerbated by the election of President Donald Trump. Searing short stories... Puntí is unafraid to explore the uncomfortable rifts of his characters' lives, particularly the lies they tell themselves to embolden or confront their justifications of their situations." -- Booklist Jordi Puntí is not only Catalonia's most important writer, but he is also one of the funniest, most perceptive writers in all of Europe. This Is Not America is a tour-de-force story collection set on both sides of the Atlantic." -- Gary Shteyngart The advice had come from the US. It is just this kind of cultural cringe to the US, and the notions it exports to these shores, that sits at the heart of This Is Not America, Tomiwa Owolade’s timely intervention into the politics of identity. Owolade contends that Britain continues to cede authority to the US, especially in matters of race, and is blind to what should be obvious: we are not America.
