About this deal

This is a real treat. Witty, dark, meta, ingenious and hugely compelling. LOVED the Icelandic setting and satirical observations. EXCELLENT." - Will Dean A bit tongue-in-cheekily, the reader is also informed, straight from the mouth of the massively popular crime author Hannah hates so much, that the main character in crime fiction shouldn’t be likeable because no one likes a likeable protagonist in crime. Which made me grin, as it felt like a little nudge from the author, telling me: you don’t like her very much, do you, no worries, you’re not meant to!” A straight-to-DVD sequel entitled Dark Days was released on October 5, 2010. [30] The script for the sequel was written by Steve Niles and Ben Ketai with Ketai also positioned as director. When filming began on October 20, 2009, Rhys Coiro and Mia Kirshner were named as leads, with Kirshner playing the lead vampire villain Lilith. [31] Other cast named included Harold Perrineau, Kiele Sanchez, Diora Baird, Rhys Coiro, and Monique Ganderton. [32] Three days after filming began, Niles revealed that Kiele Sanchez replaced Melissa George in the role of Stella Oleson. [33] The sequel was produced on a lower budget, but being straight-to-video allowed the writers to more closely follow the comic book. [34] See also [ edit ]

When she expresses her contempt for genre fiction, Hanna is publicly challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days. Scared that she will lose face, she accepts, and her editor sends her to Húsafjöður – a quiet, tight-knit village in Iceland, filled with colorful local characters – for inspiration. Atmospheric, dramatic and full of nerve-jangling twists and turns, Thirty Days of Darkness is a darkly funny, unsettling debut Nordic Noir thriller that marks the start of a breath-taking new series. I felt drawn to Thirty Days of Darkness from the start. I loved the cover (did you spot Hannah in the window?) and of course the premise, which made me expect a Nordic crime story a little off the beaten path. I started it one evening, trying it on for size, and found I was already 21% in when I first came up for air. Safe to say I found it a compelling read from the get-go and it definitely lived up to my expectations. Set during a bleak Icelandic autumn, the compelling mystery novel Thirty Days of Darkness concerns family secrets and forbidden love.

Retrieved October 13, 2006.Thirty Days of Darkness is a brilliant début and Jenny Lund Madsen is a breath of fresh air on the crime novel scene,” said Hersi Smith. “We cannot wait for Orenda Books to introduce English-speaking readers to this darkly funny and deeply original Nordic Noir.” Jørn revels in tormenting Hannah and it makes for entertaining reading. In the heat of the moment Hannah proclaims that any idiot can write a book and paints herself into a corner. Within a month, she has to complete a crime novel, and she will learn that it’s not quite as easy as she thinks. Days of Night is one of the few films I like that I can never understand why other people don't. Though I do prefer other movies like Revolver, Doomsday and Donnie Darko to it, with those I can always understand when people don't see in them what I do. With 30 Days of Night, if you don't have a problem with gore, then you shouldn't have a problem with the film. And yet I have personal friends as well as people I've heard from online who totally dig horror, gore, vampires etc. and yet don't like 30 Days of Night, which confuses me all to Hell, let me tell you. Dus door de lage verwachtigen vond ik dit boek dus wel verrassend goed en heb hem dan ook erg snel uitgelezen. Hierdoor krijgt ie van mij 4 sterren.

Dreadful. When I read this kind of bad book, trying to be charitable,I sometimes wonder if they're not intended as a (badly done) parody, but no, it's just plain awful. Hello, I am Hayley and I run Lotus Writing Therapy and The Lotus Readers blog. I am a counsellor, workshop facilitator and avid reader. A Danish literary author is challenged to write a crime novel in thirty days, travelling to a small village in Iceland for inspiration, and then a body appears ... an atmospheric, darkly funny, twisty debut thriller, first in an addictive new series.

Thirty Days of Darkness is very tongue-in-cheek, poking fun at the eternal conflict between literary and genre fiction. It’s both deliciously dark and a hell of a lot of fun to read. The question remains: will Hannah finish her crime novel? You’ll have to read it to find out. Whilst Hannah's initial snobbery about commercial fiction, and her temporary home in Iceland, is a little off putting, and she is not always the most likeable of characters, there is something about her that is compelling, and the banter between her and Jørn really does make for some great scenes. She is believable (and we've probably all seen similar literature snobs on social media) and Jenny Lund Madsen has done a brilliant job of creating a character who can infuriate and amuse within a few short lines. In spite of everything, there is a heart lurking (somewhere) under her cool exterior and, the occasional (frequent) misjudgement aside, she's actually the kind of person I enjoyed spending time with, and her enthusiasm for the mystery really came through in the narrative, drawing me deeper into the story. In fact, characters as a whole are brought to life brilliantly, painting a picture of the community and the various personalities that inhabit it, be they Hilariously scathing. Satirises genre fiction while creating a first-class example of it, full of suspects, red herrings and twists … wit and originality make it a joy to read’ Mark Sanderson, The Times CRIME BOOK OF THE MONTH Sullivan commented: “If ever there was a book destined for our list, this is it. Atmospheric, dramatic and full of nerve-jangling twists, Thirty Days of Darkness is also an outrageously funny literary satire with the convergence of (or battleground between) literary and crime fiction at its heart. Hannah is a masterful character – snobby, alcoholic, world-weary and selfish, yet strangely likeable – and her public spat with a bestselling crime writer is hilarious. The entire novel is clever, literary, thoughtful and beautiful but it is also, perhaps most importantly, an absolutely brilliant Nordic Noir thriller, full of darkness, brooding tension and unsettling turns, with an exceptionally plotted mystery. The conceits, the fact that Hannah travels to a tiny fishing village in Iceland to write her crime novel, the evocative, exceptional writing, all play directly into familiar territory for us and we are going to have so much fun publishing this ultimate meta thriller.”
