About this deal

I don’t know if it’s meant to be a take on a French farce but that’s what it feels like with similar (not) humour. Scarletta Leonas, another guest at the hotel, discovers that the reason there’s no Room 622 is that an unsolved murder has occurred. She begins working with Joël as a sort of assistant and the two amateur sleuths attempt to establish the sequence of the events leading up to the weekend of the murder. And then the translation, the use of terms that we dont use anymore in the Italian language. There is also a whining tone, that I observe in other books, especially the previous one, The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer.

Aside from the affair, espionage and corporate politics, embezzlement has been going on at the bank. All the angles are there to set up a murder mystery, but who had the most likely motive? For a large part of the story we are kept in the dark about the murder victim’s identity so we are left wondering not just who the killer was, but who was killed. It’s an interesting device. And, speaking of international banking laws – I’ve always been a fan of bank thrillers, especially the ones that involve Swiss banks. There is just something about all those Swiss banking laws that make for very intriguing stuff. Unfortunately, it was Lev that caught Anastasia's eye -- a lowly hotel employee at the time, rather than a wealthy banker. B- : too convoluted in its presentation for its own good, but there's some entertainment value to it, not least in how ridiculous the main plot winds up beingMeanwhile, Anastasia has been having an affair with Lev -- apparently the love of her life, but someone she is preparing to leave as her husband is named president. More time is dedicated to the murder in the past, which was a bit of a disappointment since the ‘today’ story is more interesting than the murder in the past. The wealthy private bank family machinations of the earlier murder seem unrealistic, bland and contrived, like having a complex plot explained to you after a movie leaves you totally befuddled.

Yes, I know I mentioned this just above, but that “book within a book” thing was a bit confusing for me at first. The author’s name as a character of the book as well? I couldn’t quite wrap my head around that before I started reading the book. Was it fiction or an autobiography of some sort? But, I soon got into the rhythm of the story and this no longer bothered me.

Puzzled and intrigued by this occurrence, Joel befriends a fellow amateur sleuth Scarlett – another one of the hotel’s guests – and together they try to pierce the veil of the mysteriously-missing room. It doesn’t take them very long to realize they’ve actually stumbled into a long and storied tale, one equal-parts frightening and intriguing. Then, I read The Final Days of our Fathers, and the Baltimore Boys, and the Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer...and with each book, I wondered: “ Is this author actually overrated?”.

However, I think some of the issues are due to a poor translation which you can’t blame the author for. There are some fairly good twists towards the end although you have to wait a long time for them but at least they are unpredictable. Unfortunately they’re not sufficiently dynamic for me to raise the rating . MY THOUGHTS: I was looking forward to a 'book within a book' mystery, which is not what I got. Think 'corporate conspiracy' instead.Macaire understands that: "It had all begun to unravel fifteen years earlier", when his grandfather died and the presidency went to his father -- and when both Lev and Anastasia's paths first crossed with each other and with him.

I’ve just been on the choo-choo train to the land of disappointment especially as I really really enjoyed The Truth about the Harry Quebert Affair, The Baltimore Boys though it has to be said less so The Disappearance of Stephanie Mailer. All these year's Macaire has been dealing with a single person, his handler, Wagner -- and, yes, if: "The whole business had the air of a spy novel", Macaire is fully on board and doesn't question the whole very odd set up. The small board of the bank was to decide on who would succeed Abel -- whereby the board members themselves were ineligible. I sighted more reading this book than I did reading the incomprehensible assembly instructions of my Ikea BRIMNES bed. Two overlapping storylines involve this trio: Macaire is the only son of Abel Ebezner, and the week in December leading up to the murder is also the week leading up the Ebenezer Bank's annual Gala Weekend at the Hôtel de Verbier, where the board of directors of Ebezner & Sons, a leading private Swiss bank, were set to announce the name of the new president, to succeed Abel, who had died earlier that year after fifteen years as head of the bank.
