About this deal

Along with great stories, the art in "Enola" is stunning! I believe the artist used markers to achieve their style, but the effect is more like a stylized watercolor. The story flows well from panel to panel with bright splashes, and I was entertained enough to read all three in one sitting. This country is mad for valuing people according to their titles. Why should an idle so-called aristocrat be considered more of a gentleman than any thrifty, sober, industrious member of the working class? Oh my goooooooooood….. finally got my hands on the graphic novels….. and they are a great gift to my broken heart after the disappointment of the movie…

Simply delightful. This is the first Enola Holmes novel I've read and it is proof that fiction for children need not be stupid, nor must it condescend to their intelligence. There is so much here that the average child would not know and yet it's not explained outright. Springer assumes, quite correctly I think, that children can and will understand words and ideas through context. I enjoyed this little adventure and you will too if you are looking for a sparkling girl trying to find a life for herself while doing her best to help others. It is only fair to point out that Left-Handed Lady is ambiguous about mesmerism -- it plays a role in the plot in a way that suggests it's a real thing. That is not completely absurd. Mesmerism as discussed and practiced in Victorian England was mostly fraud. But hypnotism is, of course, a real thing, and along with their fraudulent nonsense, some of the early mesmerists were hypnotists. I am curious to see how these things are handled in the remaining books. Nancy Springer also takes us on a tour of one of the very early versions of a ‘Department Stores’. While Enola’s experience until then is with small, individually fronted businesses, she is amazed by the sheer amount of goods and options presented by massive quantities of merchandise in just one place, but she also wonders at how it affect the people there: I have of course seen the promos for the Netflix film Enola Holmes, though I haven’t actually seen it yet. I knew it was based on a series of YA books, but I’d never read them either. So when I saw that there was a graphic novel adaptation on NetGalley, I thought it would a fun introduction. Besides, I like the art. This one was good right up till there was some kind of split personality/mesmerism thing happening at the end. At the end of each of the stories, there are excerpts of Enola’s secret notebook. This makes for an interesting addition as it reveals Enola’s thoughts and modi operandi through her doodles.

The second book in the series, starring Enola Holmes, is also a light & clever read for anyone who loves mysteries. It is aimed mainly at teenagers, but it is a very nice break for adults as well. I look forward to translating Enola's next adventures, since I really liked her first two books.. Enola, posing as a detective's assistant, investigates the disappearance of Lady Cecily, an aristocrat with secrets of her own. Did she elope? Run away? Was she kidnapped?

Unfortunately for Tewksbury superfans, the young Lord does not make an appearance in the subsequent book, The Case of the Left-Handed Lady. Yet, the film has diverged from the book in notable ways and cemented Tewksbury’s role as companion to Enola. We may not have seen the last of Lord Tewksbury quite yet. Speaking of, I don't know if these are considered MG or YA, but I think they would work for either group. The length is just right for younger middle-grade readers. But as easy as this plot seems -we are introduced to many people that would have like to have seen Bernard Daniels dead or injured. From the fired custodian, to the bookkeeper, the ex-wife or the financial adviser- we get a storm of suspects that could easily been the true murderer.

Could it be a coincidence? I loved the clever use of flowers to convey messages and the inclusion of excerpts from Enola’s secret notebook at the end of each case. The plot focuses on themes like gender discrimination, women judging women harshly and how men see women/young girls as beings who cannot take their own decisions or perform a task meant for men/boys. I loved this book so much more than the first. Where the first book was more focussed on character building and setup, this one focussed more on the mystery.Enola runs away and decides the best place to hide out from the two in under their noses in London. Before she leaves for London, she discovers that her mother has left her a notebook with secret codes about flowers and also a considerable amount of money; hidden away from the allowances that Mycroft had been providing. Lord Tewksbury was not a real-life individual; he was merely a character in Nancy Springer’s ‘The Enola Holmes Mysteries’ (the Marquess was also not featured in Doyle’s canon). Compared to the movie, the case of Lord Tewksbury takes on a completely different course in the original works of Springer. In the movie, Tewksbury and Enola f atefully cross paths, whereas the Enola in Springer’s books herself seeks out the young Marquess. On her way to a new life in London, Enola spies the case of the missing Tewksbury and considers it a mystery begging to be unraveled. Considering this the perfect inaugural case for her fledgling sleuthing career, Enola takes a detour to Tewksbury’s ancestral home to uncover the mystery of his disappearance. Nancy Springer has passed the fifty-book milestone, having written that many novels for adults, young adults and children, in genres including mythic fantasy, contemporary fiction, magical realism, horror, and mystery -- although she did not realize she wrote mystery until she won the Edgar Allan Poe Award from the Mystery Writers of America two years in succession. DARK LIE, recently released from NAL, is her first venture into mass-market psychological suspense. It turns out this length is also just right for middle-aged readers who like it when stories get the to point.

There's a comfort food quality to them that I'm just digging. As in, I'm flying through the series and there's no hesitation as to whether or not I'm going to grab the next one.So we finally meet John Watson. Bring out the party hats, y'all, it's my favourite character!!!! Except now he's sexist. Yep. For some reason, Nancy Springer has completely overlooked all the times canon Watson has called Holmes' opinions on women out. I guess all men in this version of history are sexists (no really, there isn't an unsexist man to be found in this book) Enola Holmes se oculta en Londres tras muchos disfraces y gracias a ellos puede moverse por la ciudad sin ser descubierta para resolver una misteriosa desaparición: la de una joven noble que parece haber sido secuestrada.
