I decided to charitably assume that the editor of the supermarket magazine had perhaps only watched the first BBCTV series, and most likely hadn’t read this book. For on the whole, the written word here conveys the truth of very gritty, brutal, emotionally-deprived, and punishingly hard lives. Often short lives, too. The horror of extreme cruelty to children, together with the long-term emotional damage sustained, receives neither dumbing-down nor brushing over. First, Monsieur Jacques in Regent Street washed and cut Jane's hair to emphasise her natural curls. Then they went across the road, and Jane emerged from Liberty's in a lilac blouse and a tailored suit in elegant grey. Inmates were allowed out; creature comforts were provided and families were kept together. But they continued to be run as institutions, by masters and officers whose attitudes were often set still in the 1900s. This book is unfortunately problematic. I read Worth's first memoir several years ago and I enjoyed it far more, and the reason is simple: while in Call the Midwife you largely follow her personal experiences, here you rarely focus on Worth herself. It is split into three sections, each focusing on a different person (or group of people) that she knew. Spain's future Queen:Princess Leonor asks Spanish people to 'put their trust in her' as she swears loyalty to the constitution on her 18th birthday Devastated' Friends co-stars break their two-day silence on Matthew Perry's death: Matt LeBlanc, David Schwimmer, Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox and Lisa Kudrow say 'We're taking a moment to grieve and process this unfathomable loss' Some have called him ‘the most famous Welshman ever born in Manchester’, however it was David Lloyd George’s Welshness that so steered his career and established him as one of the most influential British politicians of the modern era, second only perhaps to Winston Churchill. Interestingly my own mother-in-law, who died in 1997 aged 82, was petrified of going into hospital because she associated with the Workhouse. Eventually she did go into hospital, but she was so terrified and distraught - even though the hospital was very nice - that in the end we had to arrange for her to come and spend her last days in our home with nurses coming in several times a day, and only then did she calm down.

The workhouse, in its heyday, was intended to be a form of social welfare for those with nothing. In practice, it was seen as a dark and terrible fate. Doctors should NOT be punished for airing pro-Palestinian views, British Islamic Medical Association says
