So, this is exactly the reason why they should not be rated at 2/5 stars, nor compared to regular colored pencils. They are not regular colored pencils but are pencils great for drawing, that happen to be colored. One thing I noticed almost immediately is how cleanly they lay down. No crumbs! Also, they do not smudge! art of the day art supplies ask the desk bag blue ink calendar decor desk desk accessory digital DIY eye candy fashionable friday field notes fountain pen giveaway green ink ink inkmas ink review iphone link Link Love misc mobile office moleskine news notebook office paper pen pencil penmanship photo of the day planner podcast post and letter-writing Purple ink review stationery tool typewriter video vintage workspace Most Popular Posts Tuscan Red: With its warm and earthy tone, Tuscan Red is a unique and versatile color that can be used for a variety of subject matter. As the color lifts off the paper and onto your eraser, you'll need to mush the kneaded eraser around so that the pigment that is now on your eraser doesn't accidentally leave colored marks on your drawing. Sometimes you can just mush the color into the eraser and it will become dispersed, but other times you'll need to rub the eraser against a scrap piece of paper to get the color out. The Scholar colored pencils cater specifically to adult coloring enthusiasts. These pencils are designed to meet the needs of individuals who enjoy coloring intricate designs and patterns in adult coloring books. Prismacolor has received notable accolades and awards over the years, further solidifying its reputation for quality. However, specific information about accolades received by the brand for these particular products is not provided. The overall quality and reputation of the brand, however, are established through its long history of delivering exceptional art supplies. Some artists and kids have mentioned that it does take just a little bit of force to really bring out the bold colors. However, with regular pressure, you should have no problem seeing the marks (especially if you are using these in a journal). When laying down the color it was really difficult to tell if they were wax or oil based, the Col-Erase were neither soft and creamy or hard, but at the same time you could tell that they were not your average dollar store colored pencils. Incidentally the Col-Erase are a wax based pencil, but not as soft and creamy as the Premier.Whether its for personal note taking or you are looking for a colored pencil that won’t frustrate kids – an erasable colored pencil is an indispensable tool that can serve a variety of purposes. However, compared to the Col-Erase pencils, the erasability of the Scholar pencils is not as effective. I was sorely disappointed when they discontinued Artstix. It was a long time before I gave coloured pencils a go again after Spectracolor rode off into the art supply sunset. Not only are their results striking, but in the erasable colored pencil world, they also have one of the largest varieties (only topped by Crayola). Perhaps not necessarily a ‘bad’ thing, just one worth noting – especially if you want to draw out in the field. Yes! They do erase but erase best on light applications. Trying to erase a heavier application will lift it, but it will not erase completely. (The same can be said for graphite as well, though.) Col-Erase are great for works in progress that may need some reworking along the way, these leads erase with ease. Not only did their crayons perform well, but they were made to be completely safe, washable, and non-toxic – making them the preferred choice for mom’s everywhere. The Col-Erase Pencils excel in producing vibrant and rich colors. The pigments are bold, allowing for a visually stunning final result. But what makes these better than most colored pencils is that the eraser on the top will help to prevent any frustration should mistakes occur (a common problem kids have with markers and crayons). The color palette is very basic, which is what you would expect from a set containing only 24 colors, so the next big question would be how they perform? Perhaps their performance can help one over look the small palette, allowing for a reasonable blending experience, bearing in mind however that we are dealing with colored pencils here and not watercolor, there is only so much you can do with regards to blending. Col-Erase Performance The Col-Erase is the palest and hardest, followed closely by the contemporary and vintage Verithins. Not surprisingly, the Caran d’Ache is the softest, which is true of most Caran d’Ache colored pencils. What did surprise me was the Staedtler, which was the softest after the Caran d’Ache. Most Staedtler graphite pencils are quite a bit harder than other pencils of corresponding grades, so I was expecting this one to be on the hard side, too. All erased easily and cleanly on both types of paper, especially with the kneadable eraser. The peach study (first photo at the top of post) that I did before I learned of their intended use shows you can achieve layering and blending, but I did have to work harder. Prismacolor makes a brand of erasable colored pencils called Prismacolor Col-Erase that you can buy individually or in a set of 12 or 24. I haven't used these myself but they are designed to be erasable, although they probably won't be able to erase down to the pure white (or whatever color) of your paper - I imagine there will be some faint tint of the color left on the paper. Even so, they are far more erasable than most colored pencils. This makes them a great option for students and beginners who are just learning how to use colored pencils, because you can practice freely without worrying about making any irreversible mistakes! But one aspect that many artists and animators loved about this pencil was the ability for the eraser to remove any pigment off the surface. Like the Prismacolors, these pencils also have an eraser on top – making them great for on-the-go coloring. When using an eraser, they leave behind minimal residue, making it easy to clean up any erased areas. So, if you’re used to sketching in graphite, you will welcome this advantage – it won’t get all over you or your paper!
