Description

The Hydrogen features a fairly long, slim fit which is designed to sit close to your skin to maximise sweat management. Although the outer fabric is super stretchy, we'd only recommend having a lightweight baselayer underneath. Montane Mens Extreme Smock Black - Trekitt

Innovative, lightweight, breathable.Montane has become synonymous with lightweight and breathable clothing and equipment. Also soft shell failed too many times for me in Scottish conditions as the spin drift kept melting on the outer layer and eventually it would soak through and I would be damp and unhappy. So you still need to carry a hard shell anyway. Also consider if the walk in is in rain which isn't at all unusual.

They are pulled into shape by the tightening cords, so I think whatever size fitted would shape up nicely. I think Rab has basically opted for a slightly less than 100% windproof outer to improve breathability and you do need to add a shell layer if it’s properly windy. In reply to erikb56: thanks a vote for the buffalo. does the montane have belt to tight it like the buff? which is warmer.

MONTANE EXTREME JACKET - Silvermans

So if you are going to stand around you need to layer up, however with the none accommodating cuffs that's going to be a problem with a long sleeved t shirt and a pullover (all cotton base) My montane extreme is the big dogs knob. Warm, tough, a good fit, the toasiest hood in the world and all for 80 notes. I do still carry a hard shell if the weather looks grim but I rarely use it. I also find that on windy days there is normally a lot of spin drift and constant bombarding with spindrift eventually makes the soft shell fail with me, then I end up damp and unhappy On non windy days if its dry then you really don't need a soft or hard shell and if its snowing then again I'd end up damp in a soft shell. So for me there were rarely conditions when having a soft shell was beneficial. Out there, away from ordinary. To measure your commitment on the remotest summits. Test your resolve through the worst kinds of weather. And sharpen your appetite on hard won miles. As above, I found the Montane a better all rounder. The cut is better, zip placement better with wind flaps (my really old mk1 grey and red buffalo was a pain for freezing nips of air when winter climbing from the zips). My last comment may leave you about being drenched in sweat. Don’t be. The fleece lining doesn’t hold moisture and excess will soon run off. Even if some rain gets through the Pertex shell it will soon shed. Needs to be full length zip, definitely warm, and will be used for lots of dog walking (I feel the cold) and general out and about. Not for climbing, working outdoors or high energy outdoors. Want warmth as the main thing. The side venting zips never worked for me, I ended up taking a separate fleece for the walk in as was always over heating. I think they are much better if they have a zip all the way down the front you can open.

This size chart features leg length measurements that increase in length as the waist size increases. This size chart is appropriate to this pant, but may be different for other pants. New legwear in the range from February 2023 onwards feature an updated size chart. If you do sweat out, the pile liner dries super fast anyway, but of course it’s uncomfortable and you’re losing fluid and electrolytes too, never a good call on a hard mountain day. If you just want a no-nonsense mountain bike at an attractive price point, the Canyon Neuron AL 6 is a very good answer. My one gripe would be the velcro hood connection, it is easy to dispactch your hood when removing slings. I have added a couple of buttons and all is fine.Because the adjusters are small. Trying to adjust them whilst wearing heavy mitts is frustrating work. This is another design feature I’d change. Designed to allow flexibility, the arms have been articulated with fine microfleece inner arm panels to prevent pile constructing over elbows and biceps, and an adjustable hem too prevents spindrift entry and heat loss. A removable crotch strap also prevents hem lift when you reach up high. My only problem with it is that on the bike the side vents are a hassle if you want to use them while riding (not at any other time). Discover the perfect balance of functionality, durability, and style with Montane's outdoor clothing and equipment range. Traditionally with pile-Pertex, that protection’s come at the price of mobility, but while the Extreme’s certainly not some sleekly-tailored torso-hugging stretch soft shell, the tweaks to the cut and the articulated sleeves in particular means that ease of movement – reaching up or out in particular – feels fine.

The cuff area has been slimmed down too with quite a narrow opening, which means you can only fit gauntlets over the top of the cuff rather than underneath. Not generally an issue at low temperatures when snow rather than rain is the issue, but worth being aware of it you habitually wear cuffs over gloves. Pros The Montane is a superb fit and better thought out than the Buff. The hood is very good and fits over a helmet.

I was wetter than ever when walking on Thurs is snowy windy conditions, wearing merino wool and hardshell, just to test out the system. Buffalo never leaves me actually feeling damp and miserable, and is always warm. Plus I have a problem with overheating but the side zips work fine for me. Basically whatever you wear when precipitation is in the air, you will get wet. Its up to you how you decide to deal with it. Very warm, highly weatherproof, fast drying, relatively unrestrictive, useful venting options, cavernous hood, reasonably priced. Cons For cold snowy days in the UK it works excellently as a single layer garment or with the addition of a thin baselayer and waterproof shell for rain. The singular layer of pertex breathes well and copes with sweat better than most traditional layering systems would be able to (this is because the sweat is drawn straight through the Dryactiv insulation on to the Pertex where it can evaporate from). I prefered the Buffalo hood, the montane one is way to big for the velcro on the collar so never really fitted right.
