As with other Deebots, a retractable bumper surrounds the front half, and it includes an HD camera in the center to provide the user with a live feed of where it’s going and what it’s doing. That’s not the only way the X1 Turbo ‘sees’ though – it also has a LiDAR sensor perched on top of the bot to help it navigate and map your home, while cliff sensors on the base stop it from tumbling down stairs. The differences between the auto-cleaning bases During a one-hour mopping run, the X1 Omni returned to its base three separate times: once to empty its dustbin and twice to clean its mopping pads. To wake up the voice assistant, just say, "OK Yiko," and wait for it to reply, "I'm here." Yiko supports a wide range of voice commands, including "start cleaning," "make a new map," "mop the kitchen," and, "go mop the floor around the living room sofa." You can even say "come clean here" if you're in the same room as the robot, and it navigates to your position. Similarly, when you tell it, "don't vacuum here," the vacuum moves to a different spot. Yiko is enabled by default; to disable it, just navigate to More Settings in the Ecovacs app, select Yiko Voice Assistant, and toggle it off.

With this in mind, we’d recommend the Ecovacs Deebot X1 Turbo (the model reviewed here) to those who have mostly hard floors, particularly if you’d like them regularly mopped as well as vacuumed, and you want to be a little hands-off in the process.

The differences between the auto-cleaning bases

The new T20 Omni has the same approach, so it should cope equally well with both wet spills and dried-on stains. And it's cheaper.

The Ecovacs Deebot X1 OMNI has the most advanced universal base that emptyies the robot's dustbin, refills the water tank, washing the mopping pads and drying the them after mopping. The base has two 4L large water containers for clean and dirty water. There is also a 2.5L disposable dust bag which holds dust up to 60 days. Then there’s the Ecovacs Deebot X1 Omni, which is a truly all-in-one cleaning solution that boasts a charging station that automatically empties the dustbin, replenishes the water, then cleans and dries its own mop pads with hot air flow – a first for a robot vacuum. To be fair, the camera on the X1 has a far more sophisticated task than spying on my cavoodle. Ecovacs describe this as an “an astrophotography-grade RGB camera” which pairs with AI to enhance mapping and obstacle avoidance. As a bonus, you can access the camera from within the Ecovacs app and watch the robot clean (not recommended on a full stomach) or you can park the robot somewhere in your house and monitor the goings on; a feature which is either useful or creepy, depending on the pilot. The aforementioned Roomba is the key rival here, and as we pointed out in our iRobot Roomba Combo J7 Plus review its retractable mop pad also ensures you don't end up with sodden carpets. iRobot doesn't publish the suction power of its robots in pascals (Pa), but says that the J7+ is 10 times stronger than the entry-level Roomba 600. But as it doesn't publish the suction power of that either, it's a pretty meaningless bit of information. Unfortunately, the X1 Turbo always finished fails to completely map the entire region in the review. In other words, the robot simply ignored some rooms despite having the doors wide open. The app even indicates this with a "Mapping incomplete" message, and you can send the robot off to map its routeagain with a tap. Why this doesn't work automatically is beyond me. After about half a dozen attempts, the place is finally mapped. As with some previous Deebot models, the X1 Turbo will only enter mopping mode when the washable pads are attached, and it won’t go over carpet in this setting. This works a charm and ensures your carpets don’t get wet, though if your home has a mix of hard floors and carpets, you’ll need to place the charging station on a non-carpeted area for a fully hands-free experience. Last but not least, the surveillance camera feature is worth mentioning. You can access the live image of the robot vacuum at any time via the app and even control the Deebot X1 Turbo freely using the control pad.
